My teardrop subframe mountings and rear subframe mountings are apparently in poor condition - I think this means broken bolts or worn rather than rusty. How difficult is this job with the engine in place? Apparently they are difficult to do because of ease of access. In my limited experience everything would be easy on a mini if had the space to get at things but nothing has that space and therefore everything is really difficult. Any advice would be appreciated.

Not that hard at all really, just do one at a time. The rear mounts are easy if you can support the car without the weight being on the subby, which is easy with a few scaffold boards and stands to spread the load over the front floor.
