At the weekend, I went to change the stereo. The old one came out easily enough, although a couple of the wires looked like they had broken. The stereo worked fine prior to removal, other than a couple of issues. The stereo always had to be turned on manually and didn't come on when the engine was started. Secondly, it wouldn't store any new radio channels, but still had some in its memory. Not a major issue, it was a 3 button press to get going and became part of the routine. It was an Alpine stereo.

I had an older but nicer Sony one that I wanted to put in. So I connected it all up, and tested it and it worked fine. The only issue was that the radio didn't work because the connections were different. I like listening to Radio 1 and so decided to put the old one back in until such time as I could sort out the radio connector. Connected the old one up, and it didn't work. I thought CD is better than nothing, so went back to the Sony one. Also doesn't work. I know its getting power, because the CD eject works but the thing just won't turn on. The stereo hasn't been used in a while but it worked on the first test. I have a feeling reconnecting the old one caused the problem.

I also noticed that my intermittent wipers have randomly stopped working (I am sure they were working before I went away and that it is part of the problem with the stereo).

My first thought was a fuse, but I can't see any that are gone?

Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what it could be? No music in the car will kill me in time. Thanks

Id be checking the red power wire, the ignition switched one for the radio. The intermittent wipers go through a timed relay, which is under the dashboard, in the drivers footwell if i remember rightly.

Ok thanks. Is there anyway I could have knocked the intermittent relay whilst messing around with the stereo? All of the wires looked to be ok for the stereo but I will double check.

On the stereo, the radio aerial is a black wire but with a flat black metal cap thing to connect to the stereo (on the Alpine one, it had a fixed wire coming out of it with the 'female' part of the adaptor). I'll see if I can link a picture in which might show it a bit better.

Ok if that picture doesn't work let me know. The aerial is the black wire on the left in the picture. Can I get something that plugs into the back of the my radio and has the female part of that so as to avoid changing the wire in the car.

The picture doesn't work, but yes, you can get adapters/jacks to make it fit. I think halfrauds sell them.

Awesome. I have just checked and it looks like they will be a fiver for the adaptor. You have proven to be most useful!

It was fuse #17. The intermittent wipers work, the stereo now works, I've sorted the adaptor so I can get the radio again and the windows (passenger side only, disconnected the drivers after shattering it) now works without the engine being on again. Fuses. So simple yet such a pain. But better than a major fault or electrical fire.

Cheers though Sam.
