update time!
lets kick it off with a few overdue photos that ive finally dragged off my camera
my safety devices cage (FIA registered in 1982 ). needs a bit of love as its a bit tatty, thinking about doing a black and white stickerbomb wrap on it... not sure yet though. plus it wont be going in until the engine is sorted properly... (ill get onto that)
ive got all the front/windsreen/door bars too
and heres my 295 head
and after a clean up and a lick of paint...
ill talk about this more in a second
meanwhile, ive started a 3 month design placement in Newmarket which is about a 45min drive each way from me. ive done 3 weeks so far with my mini as my noble chariot... broke dwon on the very first day ... typical... turns out my alternator gave up the ghost and was no longer charging the battery, so it conked out on the m11 after i missed my exit on my way home ... anyway, new alternator fitted and all has been well since.
heres a pic of it sitting proudly next to the boss's Panamera... bloody ugly thing
next thing i did was fit the 9mm spacers and longer studs to the rear. only made a subtle difference but heres the stud length comparison
anyhooo... biggest development is that i managed to get it on a rolling road a couple of days ago to figure out why is been running like a bag of spanners recently (coughing and spluttering every time i put my foot down at mid revs.
i took it to a little place in Thriplow called Revivals59. it was a brilliant place which i would highly recommend, they really knew their stuff there.
(slight tangent... wasnt expecting to see this when i walked in, its owned by a mate of mine whos on my course at uni, he races it proffessionally in rally-cross. he lives in Kent which is pretty far away hence my surprise).
back on track... my car on the rollers
found out a lot of interesting stuff, the first being that my minisport cone filter was strangling my engine! massive improvement after taking that off, so ive now put the original airbox back on. fettling with timing, changing the points, and other things all made a big difference and its now running pretty damn smoothly. apparently i should look into changing my plug leads next.
biggest surprise though came when i did a few power runs at the end of the session... pulled 45bhp at the crank at 5475rpm which is a lot more than i thought i would get! keeping in mind its just a standard 998 city E with a fat exhaust and new manifolds, so was pretty chuffed with that to be honest.
however i also got confirmation for why its still lacking grunt, apparently ive got a really nicely built engine, but its got a diff and gearbox from a 1275 so its stupidly over-geared . this has lead me to the decision to take the car off the road after show season and get the engine out. this way i can get a 3.4 diff in and get my new head fitted (which will also need about £500 put into it before its ready to go on - new valves, guides, seats, seals - gulp...).... there goes my banded steelies fund ... ive also got a pretty nasty leak from my timing chain cover which needs sorting out.
anyway, thats about it for now. ill close with some dim shots since i havent put any up yet... stay classy people

If its still the original 998 the gearbox won't be a 1275 one, as the city e, 83 sprite and 25 all got the high compression 998 with the high 2.9 diff. witch is great for lower cruising revs and economy, but completely naff for performance, especially on the low powered 998.

ah right i see, probably should have been clearer. i think he basically meant that the diff ive got would be better suited to a 1275... your not wrong about economy, im averaging about 40 mpg haha.... but thats no fun!

Economy all well and good, but its no fun if it takes ages to get anywhere.
Although I found and worked out that for the 1/4 mile dual carriageways and roundabouts of mk that a ex's 1275 mg metro engine Mayfair was better on fuel than my 25 with the same engine and 2.9 diff as the city e.
As with the 1275 you could get through the gears and get to a decent cursing speed quicker than it would take the 998 and without having to work the engine as hard.

just a small one....
been running really nicely since the rolling road set tup, definitely worth it.
put my original air filter back on and its breathing so much better... then i cut some holes in it BECAUSE RACECAR
i also replaced the steering rack over the weekend, what an absolute pig of a job!! basically had to strip apart most of the car before i could lower the subframe down...
still.... got it done, and my god it made a difference. i had some pretty bad play in the old one, but its nice and sharp now. happy days
didnt take many photos so heres one just before work commensed

got back from 24hrs Le Mans at 1am this morning... the mini made it all the way there and all the way back, 10 hours each way... so proud of it!! although the journey has taken its toll, solenoid is knackered so it misfired all the way home, theres a really bad knocking from the passenger side front, and its decided to lower itself so ive split a bump stop and nearly burned my tyres out on the arches all the way home as i didnt have the tools to raise it back up again
still.... epic weekend!!!! ill upload photos when ive got them off my camera
