Hi Chris,

Have you decided what you're doing with the front of your arches?

I was thinking of rounding them off at the front like this:

As you're in the design biz, what do you think?

Cheers,
Ian

thats not a bad idea mate, and i have actually been considering doing that.

but see the cut which ive made along the length of the lip that bolts to the car? (it goes up to just about where you drawn the red line). i was planning on bending that round to the curve of the body and then fiberglassing it so it stayed there....... in theory anyway! if that makes any sense

Makes perfect sense! :-|

Honestly it does, that should work. Have you tried your bumpers yet? Mine (non genuine) needed to be trimmed slightly off each end.

I've ended up getting two rear clubman bumpers that need the mountings re-worked so will move them out slightly to clear the arches.

Do you think you'll get to any shows this year?

i swear down, this is an actual update!!!!!... one in which progress has actually been made!!!!!... who would have seen that coming?

anyway...

decided my first port of call should be to get the engine bay prepped. a while back a mate of my dads welded up a few things for me, so i went at them with a grinder to get them smooth, then just set about cleaning and flatting. im planning on filling up most of the unused holes in the bulkhead to give it a smoother look, but ill get to those later.

i also decided to wire brush the subframe cause the paint was tough and looked rubbish.

20150711_162018_zpsss9xizo3.jpg

i then cracked out the filler and made a start on the bodywork. there was a fair bit of sanding to first though; where i had used a wire brush to get the filler out the seams, it had left pretty tall ridges between the existing paint and the bare metal. but on the bright side though, as you will see, i havnt found any rust yet!!!... well nothing to cause concern anyway...

IMG_1614_zpsccuymqot.jpg

first few skims of filler. should be fun getting this bit smooth.... why oh why did i initially think it was a good idea to remove filler with a hammer and chisel!!?  >_<

IMG_1617_zpsplgrh6nl.jpg

IMG_1616_zpsl03olcqm.jpg

ive flatted back the filler and worked into the whole car more, but no pics of that yet.

now then, it was starting to annoy me how much room in the garage my roll cage was taking up, so i decided to just fit the damn thing! there was some things i need to do first though.

step one was the headliner. currently i had this nasty beige one that was covered in stains, and i had always wanted a black one, so went to halfords and bought their last can of vinyle paint. said it was only meant for plastics, not upholstery, but it worked a treat!!

20150711_161905_zpsotdmbfdy.jpg

rubbish pic. but you get the idea. this was as much as i covered before i ran out of paint, and halfords was out of stock, so i ordered some stuff from a site called 'vinyl dye'. bit more expensive, and didnt go down as thick meaning it needed more coats, but it worked. plus the site claimed it works on fabric too, though no mention of that on the cans.

IMG_1601_zps72bfgash.jpg

while i was at it, i decided to give it a bash on my door cards too

before and after

IMG_1605_zpsuj6d0gvl.jpg

pretty pleased with it to be honest. its a bit shinier than i was hoping, but still looks cool.

now i was about to spray the rear ones, when i remembered i had a problem. due to dubbing my rear arches, it meant that my rear door cards wont fit anymore, so i hacked them apart and went to town on them.

you can see how much i trimmed. got this one slightly wrong though by taking too much off near the bottom. no big deal though as its not too bad.

IMG_1602_zpshpcoxaa8.jpg

bit of contact adhesive to re-stick the covers

IMG_1603_zpsqxwnzrli.jpg

boom!

IMG_1604_zpsii6yn7zn.jpg

IMG_1607_zpsb0c9q0ml.jpg

theyre a bit rough, but theyll do the job! hell of a lot nicer than grey anyway

and since i was feeling ballsy, i decided to see if this stuff really would work on fabric. test in inconspicuous area first my arse!

IMG_1606%20-%20Copy_zpspkaimpzh.jpg

feels a bit rough but rubbed it with a white cloth and nothing came off so thats a good sign. at this point i ran out of paint so need to order some more to do the back section of the seat and a few random grey carpet patches i have.

moving on.

last thing to do was cover the rear arches with something, so slapped a bit of vinyl on them.

IMG_1618_zpslkl31qiu.jpg

pic makes it look more rubbish than it is... even though it is pretty rubbish... will look better when the door cards and seats are in.

so then. the main event. and what a pig of a job it was!!!

dad came out to give me a hand.

IMG_1619_zpscnzanrwk.jpg

pulled it together with a couple of ratchet straps and hey presto, its in!

IMG_1622%20-%20Copy_zpslsna0twx.jpg

IMG_1621%20-%20Copy_zpspwks2vaz.jpg

IMG_1620_zpsjreh3rfk.jpg

then mocked up the front bars. pics are a bit dark... bloody camera

IMG_1623_zps0j43qsyc.jpg

IMG_1624_zps3havit04.jpg

IMG_1625_zpsj0denbjv.jpg

so there you have it. gunna go out now and get it all bolted in properly.

hopefully more of my updates will be like this  ;D
