Engine doesn't sound too bad to be honest. I wouldnt be surprised if that 'knocking' noise was the exhaust blowing somewhere around the manifold, or the carb hitting the bulkhead. It didn't look like he had a box section for the weber.

What cam has it got? That might explain the rather lumpy tickover.

If you're reuilding it anyway i doubt you'd have too much to worry about. Have you thought of the sort spec you want?

i really hope youre right mate. ive got no idea what cam its got, i assume its standard or he would have mentioned it in the listing. ill probably give it a good clean up and a lick of paint and then drop it in so i can fire it up then go from there, if it sounds dodgy then ill pull it out and give it a rebuild.

the spec wont be anything toooooo mental if i do rebuild it, all depends on budget, but might stick a tasty cam in and maybe lightened flywheel or something

Id check that crank / bottom end before fitting. Mine was slightly knocking on idle (not as bad as that), and it's turned out to be my crank and bearings.
Better safe checking now whilst you can!

yeah not a bad idea. can i check that by just splitting the box from the block and having a poke around?

Still one of my favourite cars this. It's done just right, especially those wheels.

defiantly go for new bearings, and find out what Cam is in it. Also check the condition of the valves in the head, new ones would be preferable. I purchased a 1275 like yourself and im re-building it before it goes in. As soon as my 1275 is in i don't want any reason to have to take it out again.

Theres also a surprising wealth of knowledge on youtube when it comes to mini engine building. Theres a good 2 part video by mini mainia about cam timing and stuff. This will be my first A series engine re-build. A few summers ago i rebuilt an 1.6 MX5 engine with a friend though. I find the scary part is how everything needs to be so precise.
