Evening all,

just been out for a run and noticed that the aux cooling fan is not working. I assumed it was a dodgy connection on the thermo switch on the rad but this is not the case. The relay on the bulkhead  clicks, I assume it is supposed to.

When I took the wires off the thermo switch I noticed a terminal had broken off. Not a problem as I will replace that. I shorted out the wires on the pic below but the fan still did not come on.

Fanwires.jpg

Im thinking that if the relay is clicking, there must be power to it. I will have better look on Saturday but need some points.

I suppose the wires could have fallen off the fan connector or the fan could have packed up.

I need to get this sorted as im off to the Mini Fixers Cotswold tour and will be racking up some miles.......... I don't want her to get too hot.

Any ideas, hints or tips would be greatly appreciated. My last Mini had a fan and a fan belt only , lol.

Muchos Gracias

Nick

I had a strange issue with that. The relay clicked like yours and I thought it was the fan. I disconnected the fan connector and found voltage there when the relay clicked. So I thought the fan is bad. However,  I reconnected the fan connector and and looked for voltage again and there was none. I hot wired the fan and it ran. The feed wire had developed high resistance internally. To make a long story short, I ended up replacing the purple wire from LF5 to terminal 30 of the fan relay. I left a portion of the original wire at each end and spliced in a new piece that went across the bulkhead.

^^^^ Ermmmmmm

Thanks for the info but wiring can cofuzzle me at my age. Do you have any pics.

I would have thought ( as have done previosly ) that by bridging the wires in the pic the fan would come on......?

Cheers

Yes, that is correct. But the wires to the sensor activate the coil on a relay. The black wire goes to earth, the light green with white tracer comes from the relay coil. The (yellow) relay is on the bulkhead next to the inertia switch. It will have four wires. The light green with white tracer already mentioned, a light green with orange tracer (power for the relay coil from F5-6), a purple wire (power for the relay contacts from LF5) and black wire with green tracer (output from the relay contacts to the fan).

When the sensor wires are shorted out, the relay is activated and contacts close sending power out through the black/green wire to the fan. There is connector for it on the inner wing covered by the rubber radiator shroud. See the picture, you can see the connector by the fan and the yellow relay by the inertia switch. Don't let the aircon lines mess with your head.

Thanks for the info.....

I had a quick look tonite and have found the following. The fan is ok as I connected it straight to 12v and it works. That's a relief as new, they are chuffing expensive. However, when the relay clicks, there is no 12v from the connector ( pic below)

Fanconnector2.jpg

Is that what your explaining? As a temporary measure, I am going to wire the fan direct to 12v with a switch in the car so I can operate it manually. This will suffice untl I can spend longer having a look.

Any other info is greatly appreciated.

Also what is LF5 and F5-6?

LF5 = Line Fuse 5 (15 Amps) brown wire going in and purple coming out,  F5-6 the fuse is the third fuse down on the fuse box (25 Amps) light green/white going in and light green/orange coming out.

Since you are not getting voltage at the fan connector check LF5 first.

Stupid question , a line fuse..... Is that the type that are white and seperate in half. Usually found in the middle of the bulkhead?

Bingo !!!! LF5 is a poor connection. had a fiddle, then shorted out the switch and the fan came on. Happy times !!!

Just got to replace the fuse holder and put a new fitting onto the the wire for the thermo switch.

Cheers for the info..
