straighten wheels and steering !, disconnect battery, turn on a few things on to remove any residual power, undo both airbag bolts, remove airbag ....careful as you need to undo yellow wire from base of airbag and wires from the squib ring when it is unbolted and do not turn the sqib when disconnected, undo 19mm nut, remove wheel by pulling hard and rocking side to side

Did this myself only a couple of weeks ago. It may be the rotary coupling behind the steering wheel that is at fault.

Disconnect the battery and wait 1/2 hour for airbag system to dis charge. There are two torx screws on the rear of the wheel, undo these to release the wheel centre/airbag assembly. Disconnect the wiring for both the horn buttons and the airbag, then place airbag assembly face up in a safe place. Remove steering wheel as per any other mini to reveal the rotary coupling. As far as I'm aware, the coupling is un fixable as its a sealed unit. Got mine for a tenner off eBay. MGF ones are the same, (different part numbers), but slightly cheaper, got an MGF one for mine and its fine.

It may help if he removes the steering column cowl as well. Re assemble in reverse order and make sure the SRS light works as it should and there you go.

Chances are that it is the rotary coupling, the switches can be prised out from the wheel with a small screwdriver to check them but, it's very rare that they go wrong.
Hope this helps.

turn on a few things on to remove any residual power

Won't achieve anything.  The power that needs to drain is in capacitors in the SRS ECU, they will drain with time.  Turning on other things won't help this, it's electricity not plumbing.
