Hi,

A few months ago my 07 MCS started knocking quite badly and there has also been a loss in power. More recently it has also started with the "death rattle" when cold and on further research I quickly realised this was a common problem.
I took my mini into the dealer today for diagnosis and it turns out the infamous timing chain needs to be replaced at a cost of £986 + vat :(
I made it quite clear to Mini that I had no intention of paying this horrendous cost when this was a known fault and the car had not even reached 50,000 miles!! I have complained directly to BMW group customer service and they are currently contacting the dealer to request they submit a "good will" enquiry however this may not go anywhere....

Has anyone else had a similar experience and managed to get Mini to cover the cost for an out of warranty car?

Thanks in advance

This forum is more aimed at classic minis. You might have more luck on one of the dedicated BMW mini forums. But some people have experience of BMW minis on here so you might get lucky with an answer.

Thats not good especially on that age of engine. I'm not sure you will get the answer you are looking for on here so maybe worth having a look at this forum

http://www.mini2.com/forum/

they should be able to answer your question better as we are classic mini more than modern BMW mini forum. Good luck with it.

Thanks for coming back to me; I guess the picture of the classic mini at the top of the web page was a slight give away :shy:

Its not a problem, quite a few Classic mini owners on here do have the modern Minis so maybe able to help out but the other forum will be your best bet.

Good luck with it.

Hi, see my post Under 'Death Rattle' it may be of interest to you. This failure is down to a piston that tensions the timing belt and has been upgraded to eliminate the issue. BMW never recalled the car!!!

???? That is factually incorrect... Pistons dont tension anything and the engine has a chain and not a belt.

I'm guessing he means that the actual tensioner is a piston type like a brake cylinder?

I tried to join this forum. They would not have me. I filled in the registration twice and got no email from them. I think this is why so many of the Bini lot end up here. Good job this one is not so picky. :)

Known as the "death rattle" common fault - like power steering fault from watch dog...

BMW do nothing about it....except give you a big bill....(only ducks like big bills)
