Hi all,

I'm in the (slow) progress of changing my door step and boxing plate as part of a full rebuild. My plan was the replace the door step first and use the original boxing plate edge to help align the panel. Weld it to the a and b pillar, then cut out the boxing plate, replace that and then weld the door step panel and the boxing plate together.

I braced the shell before I cut out the old door step, but the brace across the door is welded to the boxing plate. I'll have to cut this weld to replace the boxing plate, but what should I temporarily weld the brace bar to? Does it matter given the door step will be in ( although not fully welded). My fist thought is to add a little diagonal bar and weld it to the flitch?

It not clear from the pic, but the floor and inner sill is rotten, so I can't weld the door step to that, until I've replaced it.

Thanks Chris

I had the same problem and welded the brace diagonal from the door lock area to above we're your door post will go in it stops movement in all directions that way. There should be a pic somewhere in my build

Hope that helps Darren

You should always use a diagonal brace anyway, as it is twist of the shell that is the main potential problem, and that is only resisted by diagonal bracing. Your brace is doing something useful and important, by helping to prevent sag, but it is doing nothing at all for twist.

A brace from high up at the front, above your working area but not above scuttle height, to low down at the back will do a lot for twist, or a pair of crossed diagonals, joined at the centre, will prevent both twist and sag, but in your case they would get in the way. If I had to do that particular repair, I would take the other approach of sitting the floor on a flat surface to prevent twist and sag, with a single diagonal.

HI both,

its not clear from the pic but my bracing is across both doors (A-B), across the car (A-A and B-B) and diagonally both sides (B to top of opposing A). However my worry is if I cut this weld, what would stop this lower corner of the car moving?

Tiger99, as the boxing plat goes up to the pretty much the scuttle height, I'm not sure there is an option for moving the door brace up.

MiniDarren - I've had a look through your build and found this image - but its the lower corner I'm really worried about....hummm

If its the lower corner that concerns you then as per my picture brace also from the a upper to b lower diagonal to the floor to keep that in place and to keep the corner reference I had no choice as it was all rotten
