Not recommended for a classic  mini as it shares its oil with the Gearbox and can cause premature wear in the box if the tappets are adjusted right Slick 50 would have done nothing to reduce the rattle, if the tappets are set to there correct clearance then suspect worn rockers at the rocker to valve pad.

How would you go about checking them? Would you have to take the rockers off and measure with vernier calipers or is it more in depth than that?

Would it be a big issue leaving them?

Never put those 'snake oil' additives in a Mini or the gearbox will fail shortly afterwards with no syncromesh left.

A good quality oil, like Valvolene Racing 20w50, Millers, Penrite, etc, have all the ingredients needed for a Mini engine & gearbox.

anything that contains PTFE (polytetraflouroethylene) isn't suitable for use in an engine.

speak to dupont and ask them what they think of using teflon in an engine.

The tappet faces can also spall, making it impossible to set the clearances.

Thanks for reminding me of the name of the stuff which completely trashed my 998 many years ago. It made the metalling peel off the bearing shells, so the crankshaft looked like a ploughed field. The hydrofluoric acid produced as it decomposed in the engine cleaned the inside of the transmission case to fresher than new condition, but did massive damage elsewhere. After fitting a new engine, the final drive pinion bearing, never disturbed by me, failed. The cage broke up, and caused the final drive to wedge tightly under load. I believe that very dangerous condition was also caused buy the acid etch.

The stuff is downright dangerous and should be banned. It was sold at the time as being suitable for engines.

If you do think that you want some kind of additive, try the Millers Oil web site. They have proper oils for classic cars such as Minis, including combined engine/gearbox, and they have a very good reputation.

If an oil needed an additive - why don't the manufacturers add it as standard?

I agree that the best thing to do is just to buy a proper oil in the first place. There are times when less is more.

I've got 280K Miles on a V6 Pajero that's only ever had regular oil changes -

Reading the manufacturer's data...I'm not sure I want to try it.

When decomposed by heat is produces hydrochloric acid in the presence of water.

MPG EXTreme PLUS™ is designed for conditioning the metal crankshaft, connecting rods, and allied parts of an internal-combustion engine.
