The ignition switch in my early 1974 mini is worn now to the point where it slips electrical connection whilst driving and I suddenly loose all power! This model switch is quite rare I believe and now obsolete so I am having real trouble finding a replacement.

My question....can I replace the switch/lock as a whole from that of a later model (is it's position clamped on the column the same/has it got the same 4 wires?)......has anyone got a '74 they would like to sell??!

Many thanks.

Are you sure its the ignition switch, do you lose other ignition fed things like your wipers & indicators when it cuts out?

You could probably make one fit, the column is essentially the same, but the cowling and stalks are different so swapping the entire column would be easier. You'd still need new loom connectors, and of course you have no column wiper switch. I'd thing your easiest option is to repair or replace the original. They are simple and similar across many models of British cars.

As Ethel points out putting a later ignition switch assembly on will require a different plastic shroud casing.

If it is just the electrical ignition switch in the steering lock assembly that is faulty then this is all in the black plastic cylinder with the wire connections which fits into the end of the ignition/steering lock assembly. It is only held in by one small cross-head screw.

If you can still get the electrical switch then this is the only part you may need to change to fix the problem.

I don't know if these are still available?

Thanks Ethel,

I may need to get one of these for my '71 project. With the switch removed from the lock unit the key turns smoothly, but with it back in place the ignition switch unit is really stiff. Reckon the switch is goosed and probably needs replaced.
