My personal loan from Santander was due to end this month. I forgot to cancel the direct debit (well, I didn't even realise I needed too) and they've taken money out of my account. Does anyone know if I can claim the money back? Hate stuff like this!

The bank that the direct debit came out of? Or Santander, who are the loan provider?

I assume Santander if they have received the payment

Yep,

Contact them, get the money back. If you don't like call centres go in to your local branch

Very unusual for them to take an extra payment if the loan has finished (although mistakes will always happen).

At the risk of asking an obvious question, are you sure the loan had finished when you thought? Most loans take the first payment 1 month after the initial advance, which means the last payment might be one month later than you expected.

If there is an error, the DD guarantee will allow you the money back so you shouldn't have a problem.

Good luck

Steve

Yeah, I'll pop into the local branch on Monday. I'm sure it finished mid-May, but you've got me doubting myself now! Guess I'll find out on Monday!

From experience in a bank I don't think they have taken an extra payment and that it is 1 month difference at the start but if there has been a mistake you'll get the money back no problem.

Check your paperwork, IE the loan agreement. That will tell you when its finished.

Santander are notorious for banking issues, my mum has had problems with them in the past with regards to payments being made when they had been previously cancelled. Always worth checking when the loan agreement payments do end but if they have taken the money past the last payment date then make your direct debit is cancelled then contact them directly either verbally or by email.

Do make sure you make a note of times and dates anything was sent, names of staff talked to and so on.
