Iam making a steel flip front and was wondering whether i could scrap the bracing staps on the underside of the bonnet? Has anyone done this and had any issues?

Thanks in advanced

Rob

I've done the steel flip front thing but I think removing the bracing would make the bonnet very flexible and would twist around alot

are you welding the bonnet to wings? if you are then yes thats fine. again if you're using bonnet pins in each corner it should be fine. but i wouldnt advise it if you're using the standard bonnet catch, and as mentioned above, the hinges are part of the brace

If you remove the bracing and retain the corners and thus the hinge points, the bonnet will be very wobbly and bendy.  It will still cover the engine as it did before but if you try and prop it up it will hang way low on the other side.  You also risk twisting the edges and cracking the paint.  It will be lovely and light though!!

Thanks for the replies. It's going to be a fixed bonnet. It's just that the bracing is a little rusty and I don't want to weld it to new wings. So you folks reckon it won't be too flexible. I suppose a single brace could be added later or a soundproofing may be attached, which may make it stiffer?

if you're going to hinge it, leave the brace in. if its removable or fixed, carry on. the flex will crack the paint otherwise

Thanks. I was hoping that would be the case. As for welding the front end. Do people fully seam weld or do on and off inch welds? Or does it not matter.

mot says all welds have to be seam welds, but if you do proper spot welds the right distances and things, you'll be fine
