Wow they're some rare wheels, I've never come across them before.

The sets I have are both date stamped from week 3 and 4 1979.

Here's the advert for mine.

They were a racing wheel available throughout the 70's, produced for the Mini challenge series believe and then offered through Special Tuning.

Mine are the ones in the bottom corner, GKN Silverstone Mini GP wheels.

It's certainly been interesting! She just managed a 200 mile round trip to London yesterday. I took full supplies as a precaution. Oil, socket set, Battery booster but she required nothing, drove like a dream all the way down and back up! You do get some very amazed looks when you blast past people on the motorway.

Do you have any reference material talking of the 10" Silverstones?

I'm afraid the only material I have on GKN's at all is is that magazine advert, and the price details for the 12" wheels from a Special tuning price list from 1977, which I've misplaced!

They details seem to be pretty elusive!

So a bit more of a comprehensive update! So I had a lovely drive down to Midland wheels on monday and had the Goodyear Rally Special tyres removed from the second set of GKN's. Had them replaced with some new Yokos, don't worry I've kept the Goodyears uncase I find a use for them!

Also dropped in to Southam Mini and Metro on the way back and had a chat, lovely guy and hopefully he'll be helping with my damaged block from my other GT.

So GKN's with new Yokos.

Had a lovely drive out today on the new wheels.

Thanks - I'd love to see some reference to the 10" version, just out if curiosity as to where they were sold.

The front wheel looks a long way back in those pics, does it have lengthened tie rods on?

Yours look cool too ! Do you have a picture with the entire rim?

The ones I have are dated 1983, I think they belong to certain Innoncenti models.

Those GKN's were meant to be mine until someone (wink wink) outbid me haha.

I now have a set of Metro Challenge 12" wheels that also look very much like the Silverstones.

I kind of agree the rally tyres gave it real stance. It did look a little silly from the rear though, and they did need arches. Also the rumble of the rear tyres rubbing was awful! You certainly couldn't take any passengers without smelling burning rubber.

I have kept the tyres though, I'm sure I'll use them again one day.

I'd always wondered that, as the 12" wheels where available through special tuning the 10" ones I have no idea at all!

There's no mention of them as an option in a 1971 Special Tuning brochure.

I think it's just a illusion, slight right hand down on the steering. They're standard length tie rods, and usually sit centre in the centre of the arches.

Yours look cool too ! Do you have a picture with the entire rim?

They look stunning, suit the car perfectly, and a very nice mini as well! Yes I'd agree with you there I've never come across a set in the UK.

I certainly do, this is from another set I have just after I had them powder coated

1393581_10153321837170006_1677308227_n_z

They're remarkably light, and I've been told incredibly strong as they where developed as a racing wheel.

They are also in my opinion the best 12" wheel, and suit the clubman fronted minis the best.

Those GKN's were meant to be mine until someone (wink wink) outbid me haha.

I now have a set of Metro Challenge 12" wheels that also look very much like the Silverstones.

Ahh yes I remember, I made sure I had them in the back of the car before I came clean to you though! If you'd have seen my maximum bid you probably wouldn't have even bothered either, I did buy an entire car for a set! If it's any consolation they've been put to good use.  I was offered a set of those when I was looking last year, very nice wheels, are yours the ones which are basically silverstones but with the flat rather than dished centers? Unipart GAW122?

Hey, nah they aren't the GAW 122's, the spokes are dished in the same sort of way as the Silverstones (outwards). They have James B stamped on them too. I'll get a photo for you when I get a chance.

They look superb !  In gold, they could also be beautiful too.

It's just a shame that they are 12 inches :(.

I've never seen a set of those before! says they're Mini challenge wheels on the Mini wheel directory, I've never seen a set in competition pictures though.

Wonder what they'd look like on a car, massive positive offset and 4.5j wide.

Thankyou it's taken me years to source some!

They also made them in 10 inch.  :proud:
