I'm still undecided...

We'll see.

So yet another busy weekend miniing!

I've always struggled taking passengers as over any reasonable bump I burn my rear tyres on the inner arches!

So off it came!

DSC_0006_zpspm1qhrdj.jpg

mmmmmmm I love my minifins.

DSC_0007_zpsqf53kkqq.jpg

Old Knackered cones vs new ones.

DSC_0009_zpsjy3fc4up.jpg

The old (I'm assuming original) Cones where very attached to their homes, and shed the rubber leaving the metal housings on the trumpet and subframe. The Subframe side was easy. One large tap and the cup popped out. The trumpet side on the other hand would not budge.

In the end after heating, hammering, and far too much penetrating fluid I had to resort to the angle grinder. Cut the tops off the cups and then carefully slotted the remains. Managed to liberate the trumpets with no damage!

Liberated trumpet.

Had a little trouble with one of the nylon cups. It would seem one arm got refurbished, one didn't.

Much swearing occurred.

Also had new built up knuckles with new cups, just because it would be silly not too.

Aaaaaaaaand back down on the ground.

Now thats a properly stanced mini.

I then went to meet up with someone I met at Stanford Hall. Also an avid Mini Challenge fan.

He thought my car may have been an ex-challenge car! So my plan succeeded.

Ended up talking for ages about the race series and 1275 GT's.

He even provided this....

coming to a certain GT very soon.

So this was the order of the day today!

DSC_0123_zpsf4jrri35.jpg

I finally got fed up of driving round with what sounding like a pestle and motor in my diff!

Oh the grinding was awful.

I've become a bit of a dab hand at engine removal! Had it out in no time.

DSC_0125_zpsuuozhavk.jpg

& the offending item.

DSC_0126_zpsusxl6mpl.jpg

So there's a bit of play!

So hopefully with this hoard

DSC_0134_zpsj0gooa7k.jpg

I should be able to fix it!

We'll see tomorrow.

Joe

So the fibre washer on the OS was a little worn....

DSC_0139_zps4kv45jpa.jpg

All built up with a competition diff pin, new planets, and all new washers.

Oh and a new cage and output shafts.

The old diff pin didn't seem to have any wear, the planets did, but something (maybe the bush in the diff cage) caused the output shaft to eat through the fibre washer and start on the diff cage!

DSC_0140_zps1vw4u5dq.jpg

I also put new diff bearings on, why not while it's out!

The crown wheel looks like it's new! As does the gearbox internals that I can see which is always nice :)

Well if anyone was wondering I managed to get it all back together on sunday evening and drove it back to where I'm living. Always a bit nerve wracking driving a car 150 miles after the engine was on the floor a couple of hours before!

While the engine was out I thought I'd address an oil leak that had reared it's head!

DSC_0152_zpscp92xobm.jpg

Just a small easy one then. Oh and my dad didn't like the look of the end core plug, he then poked a hole in the core plug with a screwdriver. It was very close to breaking through! Luckily I had a spare.

DSC_0147_zpsjv2kspto.jpg

DSC_0149_zpssiiieaha.jpg

So I do have a 3.44 diff, always nice to know for sure.

DSC_0146_zpsb9au8dfs.jpg

All Prepped to go back in.

The picture taking stopped at that point as it started to get a little dark.

DSC_0158_zpstvwcvcj1.jpg

I also put on a new gear selector coupling, as my old one you could shake! The roll pins now locate in it keeping it secure and it has improved the gearchange.

Only problem is it still has a road speed dependent noise! No fecking idea what it is. (The only thing left is something beyond the crownwheel in the gearbox (but not engine speed related) or the drivers side wheel bearing (which is rock solid) The passenger side I changed with a new hub recently.

Oh and I tried to adjust my clutch properly since I found a cracked master cylinder lid, and now it crunches again,so I need to sort that!

There's always something to do!

Drives nicely though, feels really tight and together.

Joe

We have two substantial oil leaks in ours to sort. One is from an oil cooler pipe, so easy enough. The other is from 'somewhere in the gearbox area'. So I bet that'll be a nice small easy one too...!!

Good work in getting all that fixed, back in & driving home in a day!

That's some good work! I'm scared of diffs and gearboxes - have been since I managed to break a crownwheel into 3 pieces (no idea how!).

Thanks everyone it certainly keeping me busy.

I think I'm going to change my driverside wheel bearing just to be sure when I get a chance.

But for now it's driving nicely. I took it out for a good run after work and it really feels lovely now.

I think I need to pop into this pub! All I'm hearing is good things.

Good luck with that! I did all my seals when the engine was out of the car a few months back, but it sprung a new one!

Now that is impressive! I was very careful with mine when I had it out!

I have been most neglectful on the cleaning front! Haven't washed the poor girl in weeks!

So it's just gratuitous pictures I'm afraid.
