I use exhaust cotton reels - seem a big stronger, certainly stiffer because they're shorter and hence they also lift the housing slightly

Ahh thats a good idea, although it's not the rubber thats failed, they've failed where the rubber joins the metal.

there wasn't a hint of side to side movement with the new bushes, hopefully a new bush on the stabiliser should finally improve the shift feel!

Great project ! I got new shock mounts about a month ago and they have already started to go rusty >_<

Thankyou :) I'm really shocked (no pun intended) at how quickly they've degraded, next time I jack up that side it'll be coming off for a liberal dose of paint.

cracking thread mate, on the selector bushes, my car has been on the road for about a year and a half now, i had to change mine a few months ago because i had the same symptoms as you and i was under the car while removing the engine and those ones are scrap aswell and were meant to be 'genuine' rubbers and only lasted about 4 months

ive been trying to find polyurethane versions but no luck yet

great job on the gt anyway mate, absolutely love it

Thankyou I'm glad you've enjoyed it, although it does look better in pictures, I'm gonna get some flack when show season comes around!

It's not good for inspiring confidence is it! I think I'll be following the advice of GraemeC and fit exhaust hangers, as they have to take a bit more punishment so should last a little longer.

& again thankyou, I'm glad you like it. :)

I finished fitting the replacement bushes supplied by minispares on Friday. They also supplied me with a replacement gearbox stabiliser bush FOC, although this did not fit. I ended up making my own.

DSC_3393_zpsxcy5vwgx.jpg

This was the replacement bush supplied and the metal sleeve that was inserted in it's place. I used some rubber tubing cut to the exact size of the hole to simulate the proper bush.

The one supplied was a good 2mm larger in diameter to the hole in the gearbox casing.

Once this was done I gave everything a good look over before a little road trip.

The trip was down to Cambridge for a friends birthday. Decided to take this mini because, well I don't know because I'm an idiot.

Performed beautifully and on less than a tank. I arrived late on Friday and when I went back to get my bags later I found She'd made a friend.

So to the owner of a lovely R reg Sports pack I did find that amusing :)

Then a quick wash.

Just as I finished it rained, typical!

Spent the afternoon tidying up the interior, cleans up quite nicely!

I also replaced the snapped window winder, don't know my own strength!

Little play around with some editing.

Can you tell I've run out of things to do on the car?

I think it's as good as it's going to get without a complete rebuild and respray.

I think the roof could do with spraying the same colour and the bodywork. That is all :)

I agree with you on that. Painting is not my forte though, especially after the mess I've made of the rest of the car.

The pictures are more than flattering.

When I got the car the roof had already been rubbed back, so all I could do was primer it.

That took a lot of paint as well!

Sadly painting the entire roof is way beyond me especially since I've been spraying with a can!

I love it though, it's rough enough to use all the time, and nice enough that I'm happy to drive it.

Yea it looks fine with the white roof but it's just personal preference :). How about a vinyl roof?

It's been so nice to have a GT to drive around in, I've been using it exclusively since October.  Before I bought this one I was in a similar boat, years into a long term project with little light at the end of the tunnel. So the prospect of having a working car was too much to resist.

No I do agree it'd look better monotone.

I've always had a jaded view on vinyl roofs, mostly because they hide rust on poor examples!

The long term plan I think is to finish my long term project and then pull this one off the road and do exactly the same, remove repaired and bodged panels and replace them properly.  Give it the treatment it deserves, it'll go back to it's original colour at this point as well.
