Failed my mot today :( one thing they said to me was that there was no warning light that came on the dash to indicate the fog light was on.. Even tho my fog light works fine, they said it is an Mot failure.. It has never came up before on an Mot for my car :S

Has anyone else been caught out by this or is it a new requirement?! Did minis ever have (from standard) a warning light for fog light?

Cheers
Carl

Bleedin picky MOT testers! what bums. mines in for MOT tomorrow. For your problem it should be part of the switch.

its a 10 quid part surely they should give u a provisor to get it changed and show them within ten days then they give u the cert.

I have an LED right next to the fog light switch so I think the plan is for that to be wired. That LED isn't connected to anything at the moment so it may have been for the fog light in the past. Don't know why it isn't connected to anything now. Those switches with a light on them do seem handy so might get one of those in the future. =] I'm just getting a quick fix for the time being so it can pass its Mot.

Lol exactly how I felt. Too picky if you ask me. Thanks for link :) that's what I already have tho... They said another light needs to come on like on the dash to clearly show the switch has been pressed..
I'm sure, come to think of it, that my switch already does light up cause its exactly same as link.. Granted it may not be bright and switch is down low on right of driver but I thought this would be enough :S

If i was an mot tester, i think i would be more likely to fail a car if there was a light that didnt come on (regardless of it was wired to or not, just if it looked associated with it) than if there wasnt a light to start with

Do other people have a light which comes on with the fog light switch then.. Because I don't have anything other than the switch and my car hasn't had one in 22 years.

If the switch lights up as it should, then that should suffice in my opinion.

If that's all it had as standard, that's all it should need now!

Just to clarify do you need a light up switch AND a separate light?

No, the requirement is for a visual warning for the driver when the fog light is on, so an illuminated switch is fine.

If the car has been rewired so that the light in the switch is lit with the sidelights to show the location of the switch then it may need a separate warning lamp if it isn't clear to the tester that there is a warning being shown.

There are some very silly statements in this thread.  Yes the car needs a warning lamp to show the rear fog is lit, and any car that needs to have a fog lamp to pass the test has the same requirement.  That is to say all cars after 1980.  As long as there is a lamp that lights up or clearly gets brighter to show the lamp is lit then it doesn't really matter where it is.  It's not picky, it's the law and part of the test.  It either has one or it doesn't and to be honest it's just about the simplest thing to check for yourself before going for the test so why should there be any leeway?

Just been down the garage and done a bit of investigating. Turns out the car failed because the of a dodgy connection behind the switch so the bulb in the switch has been blown! Fixed connection and changed bulb and now should pass!

To clarify, I have found out you do not need another light to show your fog light is on if the switch itself lights up fine. The garage told me i needed a light on my dash as they work on modern cars and that's what they are used to seeing. They didn't realise the switch is meant to light up.

Sorry if I have caused people to worry.
