i've purchased a jack knight sccr gearbox which i am going to replace the baulk rings on, the gearbox was originally purchased from and built by brian slark in 2001, which baulk rings are the best to use as i've heard that the standard rover ones will not be compatible.

cheers.

Any will do.... check the gears for damage tho' cause once their broke, that's end of gearbox as spares for JKD boxes are pretty much non-existent.

the gears are fine, second baulk ring is worn but the gear cone and dog teeth are fine, it was going up the box fine but it was snatching second when coming back down the box.

Hi,

I'm sure someone like Guess-works will be able to help being the resident Gearbox guru.

What would help is if you could tell us if it's a dog-box or synchromesh and how many gears it has etc.

I'm interested in this question too as I've got a six speed Jack Knight Dog Box and I'm a little apprehensive about getting spares for it!

If it was a dog box, you would not be looking for baulkrings...

Six speed JKD dog box, hmm, good luck with that one... I have a feeling that some of the parts from the 5 and 4 speed are common, but still finding them in good condition may be a bit of a stretch.

I heard of someone trying to find a laygear for a 5 speed JKD box, and I believe they eventually had to get a gear company to make a one off at vast expense... may have been cheaper to just buy a new 5 speed box.

its a 4 speed 4 syncro box, john has already replied, i was just worried about using std baulk rings as someone said that the minispares steel ones were the ones to use.

I've been beaten to it!  :-)

Is there no where that could / would machine up new gears etc for the Jack Knight Box's?

Guessworks could be on to a little winner if you could provide such services!

It's sounding like I'm going to be running the gearbox till something goes wrong then it's game over!  :ohno:

thats what i was thinking, surely it can't be all that difficult for someone to copy the gearsets and its not as if they are under copyright or anything as jack knight developments dont exist any longer!

the engineering place next door to where i work do a lot of machine work for swiftune (flywheels, rockers etc) so i may ask them  as i know that they have their straight cut gears specially made for their old BMW race cars with 5spd dog boxes.

That would be great solihulian!

I'm sure that there would be plenty of people out there who would be very interested.

I do double de-clutch the olde dog box when changing down and use the CTV oil which has the gearbox EP additives in it, both with intention of trying to preserve the gearbox as best I can, I just know that one day I'll need spares for it and then where do you turn!

i have been in contact with a man who owns my dads old touring cars, and he got quaife to make up the dog gear sets for the boxes, as the gears were made by autodelta back in the 80s!

you will be able to get parts made, and made very well, but its going to cost!! :P

i wouldn't imagine it would be as bad with a dog box as you dont have any baulk rings to wear out, the guy that i bought the gearbox from is getting a swiftune dog box which is why he didn't bother having the jack knight box rebuilt.

It's probably the dog teeth / sliding collar that will wear on mine first being as the transmission is unsynchronised.

I've found the ultimate transmission that I want in my mini....

te bits in a dog box that wear are the dog rings.

if the driver has used it in racing the dog rings will be questionable, the dog rings we have in the hewland boxes at work get replaced as soon as there is noticable wear on them..this is normally only a couple of meetings ( one meeting is normally practice, qually, race 1 and 2) so there really is no 'its only a little wear its ok' unless its for road use

and if its for road use, you really would be better off with a syncro box :P

The dogbox was fitted to the car when I bought it.  It  was brand new when it was fitted to the car and it's only covered about 2,200 miles now so I'm hoping to get a few more miles out of it!

The car is only for "road use" so maybe a synchro would be a better idea although it really does come in to it's own when I go out for a good blast!

Is there any reason why this is in the forum feedback section?
