Hi,

Please help.... I'm the least mechanical person there is.... The clutch on my 98 mini cooper has started to get gradually stiffer How do I go about fixing it?

Many thanks

check the system for fluid(cylinder next to servo/ master cylinder), it could be empty, if it isnt, try bleeding the system first there colud be air in the system

That sounds like the clutch slave cylinder which is to the left of your engine below the brake servo. Could be leaking too if the clutch is playing up. Check for signs of fluid loss

Theres a brass bush in the pedal that the pedal shaft goes thro, that could be worn

Try to identify where the sound is coming from, inside the car or outside in the engine bay.

As mentioned the pedal box area inside the car could be the source or perhaps more likely the clutch arm on the clutch side of the engine.

There are several components that need maintenance there and if they have been ignored may be quite rusty and causing a problem.

There are several pieces that also wear out and eventually need replacing especially if they have not been greased regularly.

I think it's outside.... When I got my son to pump the clutch and I was outside it seemed to squeek from underneath the car when the clutch was depressed.

I would say its the slave cylinder. My wife's Yaris has the same problem.

Can you watch it whilst someone else pressed the clutch pedal. That will tell you if it is the slave cylinder, or not

its going to be the pivot point between clutch arm and slave cylinder, it needs oiling to avoid friction, its located on the left hand side of the engine bay on the clutch housing :)

I agree with Alex_B likely to be the pivot point I had identical problem just a week ago. Quick squirt of WD40 or a few drips of 3in1 oil should fix it

look into the the engine bay. on the left by the clutch housing, you will see the arm by the slave cylinder, if what the other posts mean by pivot point
