My family are mostly coppers, my Uncle retired after being stabbed in a post office raid in Poole. But I have been in a car a relative who was well over the limit but got let off because his partner was recognised as a copper. As an ex Met Police Officer, this sentence deeply saddens me. Makes me think all the hard work, training, getting up early to get down to Hendon every weekend, finally passing and putting a lot of hours on the street was for nothing. I've held back from the Police bashing comments, as people have a right to say whatever the hell they think of Police, I used to get it all the time on duty, so it's nothing new. I'd like to tell you that not all of the Police force are like this, granted, the force doesn't exactly have a good reputation most of the time, but I think that's a lot to do with bureaucracy rather than how the force behaves.I have no respect for the police force of this country
To the OP, as said keep at the Police, believe me, if he has taken over 1k of your money, he's most likely done it elsewhere before and they will know about him. Have you spoken to citizens advice bereau?
Do I rate my local police? No not at all. There ar some great officers who try to make a difference but most don't seem to give a damn. One in particular was plain offensive and attempted to fabricate evidence (after they failed to take details of a witness to an assault) and I was 'leaned on' to stop me informing the IPCC including being falsely told information to stop me taking it further. The same officer smashed into an old ladies house in the night and it was widely reported that she was drunk, mysteriously the car and evidence disappeared and she was let off. We live next to a park and over the years I can count dozens of incidents for either us or our neighbours. Guess how many have ever ended in something happening to the perpetrators? None, zero, smilch. I was even told on one occasion that it was not in the public interest to arrange an identity parade for a youth who had been terrorising an old lady for nearly a year - I had known the youth for 5 years and could have recognised him in a dark cellar, at night with a bag on my head. How can you expect respect when this happens?
I feel sorry for the decent coppers working hard to do a good job, they are the ones most let down by this corruption and incompetence.

I have to say there are some seriously ineffective officers out there who ruin it for the rest of them. The problem is that it only takes a second to destroy the faith you have in the police, and everyone instantly forgets the thousands of hours put in by all the other officers as soon as one makes a mistake.
I'd never do the job, it's the most thankless task imaginable, I have the utmost respect for those who do the job properly, and complete resentment for those who aren't up to the task.
I can count the times the police have failed me on one hand and still have enough fingers left over to pick my nose, and the times I've needed them and they've been there to help well exceed it. Every job is going to have bad apples, because we're all human, it's just that the bad apples in the police force have a level of power over ordinary citizens that makes their incompetence much more harmful/potentially dangerous.
The issue with this kind of case is it's so hard to track down the offender. All you have is a number (mobile I assume) that's probably a pay as you go. You also have a post office he went to, but he could have travelled 50 miles to post it. I would if I was him! The address you have could be for anyone, here's one I'd use if I was pulling this scam;
Address removed. I just pulled it out of google maps in about 10 seconds. It's somewhere south of Sheffield.

There is a problem in this itself. I know they have the PNC now to try and avoid situations like this, but working in an organisation that is also rubbish at sharing information, I can imagine that if he has committed offences in relation to people in different areas, there will be a couple of officers possibly in each location, but not talking to each other and thus loose ends can't be tied up etc. I hope I am wrong and that this isn't the case. But who is going to link three reported fraud cases - one in Nottingham, one in Dorset and one in Manchester for example? Highly unlikely.
It is a real shame that the Police, like many other publicly funded organisations, have fallen into a state of achieving very little of good effect. If you ask me, Coppers should have the book thrown at them and the maximum sentence for the crime they commit - as law enforcers they absolutely should know better.
The other gripe I have is police fitness levels. Despite being in the army, my own fitness levels are not that great at the moment. However, the entry test alone for the Police is a joke. Its something like level 6 on a bleep test. One of my best mates is a big lad, is hugely unfit (he had done a bit of training at the time) and even he considered it a breeze. If it starts like that, how can things get better? I want Coppers on the street who can chase the young sods committing crime, not need a car to catch them.
Part of me would like to be a Copper. but I feel I would get caught up in the bureaucracy. I hate it. Its all an arse covering exercise. Frankly, as long as there is no abuse going on, I really don't care what happens to someone who is detained.
But we are getting seriously off topic with the Police hatred.

Phoned action fraud who said to put it behind me.
Who are these action fraud people? I honestly can't believe that the official response to this case is "Ah, f**k it"!
Edit: They're actually official!! Try tweeting them telling them they're not doing their jobs properly. That might get them in gear to help. They can't fob you off as easily if you're calling them out in public.

But I have just phoned parcel force and they have told me the weight it was when it was weighed at the post office which is very useful.

I refuse to believe there is nobody out there who will help you with this. You could easily complain about the Police if they don't do anything based on what I've read. You can't just go to someone 'hey would you like a camera for £1000', take the money and give them some paper.
Have you tried setting up an online transaction to take the money back out of his account? Believe this or not this once happened to me when I was paying rent to my landlord for the first time. Instead of setting up a standing order to pay INTO her account I accidentally set one up to take the money OUT and it did it, no questions asked! After a couple of months I noticed and because I am honest I put matters right.
Ok, this was 10 years ago but you might be able to try it.

worst thing that'll happen is that he gets put further into his overdraft and gets a bank charge!
I wouldn't get into doing that just yet though, you should avoid doing things that could compromise your position as the victim.
