It's stupid! Why do so many people protect the real criminal?. Like above its amazing how you can be going 4 mph over the limit and they pull you up for it but someone that has just been robed of £1k they don't really care about! I'd be tempted to take it down to your local police station and say I had spoke to so many officers yesterday and I feel that I am not beening taking seriosly??

It's not stupid at all, if someone could get information on you by going to someone holding the data and saying "So and so did this!" then there would be much bigger issues. Data Protection is there for a purpose.

I know where you are coming from. And im not at the fact that data protection is a bad thing. But in this case it really is. He was a victim and data protection is covering the criminals arse. I think they should do something about it when someone has been a victim?.

Just read all this and feel for you. Unfortunately some people are very very good at lying through their teeth.

Your local police should have an internet fraud department, pretty sure mine do. I'm sure it is a police matter as this is fraud no doubt about it. They have the power to trace the numbers, perhaps his email/Gumtree account.

Good luck catching him. Citizens advice might be able to help or see if you can speak to a lawyer about the legalities as people can't just go around doing this!

No idea how long I will be waiting for the police to do something. As of today, his phone still rings.

So, this morning I phoned the number on a withheld line to check if it is a working number.

To my suprise, someone answered.

His supposed girlfriend.

She gave me this story that he has gone to prison and charged with fraud which I didn't believe because he spoke to me thursday and I don't think that it would be that quick a turn around.

She gave me her first name, says I wouldn't get my money back but could offer me £10 for petrol and a small amount a week if I didn't go through the police. Said he was a lovely bloke too   I gave no information away to her other than the amount of money I sent. She cried and said she was scared when I asked for further information. Apparently that is his real name and she even told me he was using 2 different second names. Said he had a gambling problem. Along with a load of information...

Well at least that number works, she said she was sorting his mess out.

But somehow I think he was sitting in the room with her...

Strange. But more info for the police.

HAHAHAHA. What a load of crap.

Yes more infor for the police but be careful of keep trying the number. The Police might well ask you to stay away and let them do their job. Frustrating, I know, as you don't see any progress being made etc. But if anything does come off it and it ends up in court, something you accidentally say etc might lead to him getting off. Or failing that, harassment of a witness etc could also count against you.

Just be careful.

Keep pushing the Police!

There are loads of things for them to investigate, bank account, Gum Tree, phone number etc!

If the details he has given aren't real then they can look at fingerprints from the packaging to identify him.

You don't scam over 1000 quid from someone as your first offence either!

As I said, I didn't give her any info other than the amount of money I sent. First time I phoned that number since last Tuesday on a withheld line.  She even said I shouldn't be speaking to him if it's a police matter. I just said I just wanted him the explain.

I'm not trusting anyone after what has happened, especially someone who knows him. For all I know, they could probably be all in on it.

He could've been! a little holiday before going back to court for sentencing!

I have my doubts though, she's just trying to make the situation go away!

My guess is she is in on it with him. I wouldn't trust her as far as you can throw her. Tears are crap - don't be fooled by that. As for saying you shouldn't be speaking to him if it is a police matter - she does have a point. But said like a woman trying to fob you off. They are probably well aware that the police will do very little about it. A sad state of affairs. I feel for you.
