Hello folks,

I am looking for tips on the best way to check & adjust ignition timing on an early A-Series engine. Preferably with a timing light. This engine does not have the usual timing marks on the bracket of the timing cover. The only marks are available on the flywheel. Does anyone know of a good method to create the timing marks on the timing cover or any retrofit parts? Or is there a method to make setting the timing with this early engine a bit easier? I have changed the timing cover to a Cooper one I believe, which has the timing marks under the crank pulley. But can't see how these can help.

Thanks.

set the timing to TDC on firing stroke, and mark with tipex on the fan belt pully and block (use a straight edge)

i have never used a timing light, i dont believe they are very accurate. (my oppinion)

The thing with timing marks is the early factory settings would have been for leaded petrol with different octane ratings, throw in wear and tear on timing gear.

If its running, try advancing the timing listening to the revs rise, at the point they start to drop off, retard the timing slightly ..

Test run it and listen for pinking under load, If you get pinking retard a bit more.

A quick question. I've heard people mention pinking before. What do you mean? Like the noise you get when you select 4th instead of 2nd?

Sorry to highjack... :D
