Hi all,

have just tiger sealed the front and scuttle joins.

I am waiting for it to dry properly before applying any paint but the fella in the paint supplies shop says to spray it with a plastic primer first or the paint may well peel off later due to adhesion problems.

Seems like a good idea but thought I'd ask???

my dad usually gives all mini's 2 coats of high build primer before applying the colour, this way of working hasn't failed in 10 years.

I done the front right hand seam today as well, although I'm a perfectionist and masking taped it to have clean cut lines but I'm sure it makes no difference.

My only concern with other primers like plastic is you don't want to cause any reaction when you come to prime/spray the car, it may well work its just a matter of testing it really.

I was told to spray the plastic primer then spray over with my regular primer, which is etch at the moment),  and that is ok with my rustoleum at present.

Pierres,  it was still tacky after 2 hours,  probably the temps so have left it till tomoz.

Ok so is Tiger Seal any better/ different to normal weld sealer? Why is it so good? I've seen other forums with people raving about it.

Where you have painted it in your pics - how did you get a decent edge so that it isnt horribly visible when you paint over it?

Thanks,

It looks nasty,  granted,  but the edges were feathered out using my thumb and a little water like silicone sealant so hopefully the edge will be invisible once painted.  I have read tonight that panel wipe can be used to feather the edges too.

I think that normal seam sealer isn't liked in visible areas as it is a nightmare to get looking smooth.  PU sealant/Tiger seal can be smoothed out quite easily.

It is my first time using it so I am still learning too !!

Graham I would try and cut that sealant back into the grooves to be honest. Either that or rub it back. I have never used anything other than normal paint to overpaint either Tiger seal or Aviation sealant.

When I did mine, I used tiger seal and then thinners on my finger to keep it localised to the groove, I then allowed it dry over night then I primed it with filler/primer 2 coats then obviously rubbed the primer down then on with the topcoat

Looks like I have missed a couple of the straight line seals Corrado !  Put them on this morning and sealed the headlight ring too.  Smoothed off with thinners so the edge is feathered in.  Still looks messy but should be smooth.

Neil,  I have tried to get the over sealed areas back to the line but it is just making it peel off, so have stopped as I don't want it loose under the paint.  If anything shows through the paint I will have to add more coats round that area so I can flat back to a smooth finish.

As I said in my thread,  sealant use is one of my failings in life,  just hate the stuff lol

Just an update...

I have rubbed the sealant back to the panel join as you guys recommended as it did look crap and would have annoyed me.  Before I did this I gave it a light spray with a plastic primer and I have to say it was welded on and hard to rub off.  Looks much better now.  Think the plastic primer should do it's job.
