Working away swapping the gearboxes from 998 to 1275.  One question, on the diff when you remove the two outer plates there are shims.  On the passenger side there was only 1 and on the drivers side there were none.  I seem to remember on my 998 that there were numerous shims but of varying thickness.  Im going to swap the diff from the 1275 box onto the 998 box as the 998 box has had its shims off for years and as such, no idea how many go on each side.

So am i right to carry on or is there a way to work out shims etc?

Answers greatly appreciated asap as we are out in the garage just now!

Each diff is individually shimmed to allow for tolerances in the diff, bearings and casing. You must never interchange diffs without re-shimming, following the procedure in the Haynes manual. It is not particularly difficult, if you follow the procedure exactly. I don't have a manual to hand right now, or I would be able to tell you the facts and figures.

One snag is that Haynes have removed gearbox overhaul info from all recent manuals, presumably including the Mini, as they considered it to be not a DIY job (untrue in the case of the Mini) or not cost effective (often true). If you get an older manual from Ebay you should be ok, or buy a set of Rover manuals on CD for a few quid. They will save their cost 100 times over, or more.

i don't bother with the gasket on the shimmed side

shim it to just a fraction less then 0 preload

then use good quality sealant

unless you know what your doing, use a gasket and follow the book...
