Dont know how I did this but I did....

It even started. Then I noticed the smoke. Stopped engine quickly and whipped leads off battery....

Under the bonnet seems OK. Cant see anything.

Likely to be any damage? Anything that I can check.

I'm a little reluctant to reconnect the battery (the right way) just yet.

Diodes possibly in the clocks and alternator, radio if you've got one!

The newer the car, the more potential damage!

What age is it?

Where was the smoke coming from?

Before reconnecting you need to see if you've melted any wires as they may catch fire when you reconnect

Smoke from under bonnet. Its an old mini - 1996. jap import.

I'd have hoped that fuses would blow wouldnt they? How does the starter motor smoke?

Like I said weird how it actually started too.

I've opened the bonnet now and it doesnt look that bad. Cant see anything obvious.

Bit scared to connect it all up again for now.

Would that smoke? Likely to be screwed now then? If thats all it is then I'll be semi-happy.

Thought the whole lot was going up!

Carlos is correct in giving the cables an eyeball for any damage but usually reversing the polarity shouldn't cause any cable, or loom damage.

Have you detected any blown fuses yet?

I'd quickly eyeball the cables, make a note of what fuses are blown, & what are good, & before diving in to replace the fuses I would then re-connect the battery 'correctly' then check around the car for bad smells, then one at a time replace the fuses starting with the most car critical i.e anything engine electrical, then lights down to least critical like radio, check that the new fuses hold out - cross fingers and start again.

You shouldn't cause any extra damage doing this, if there is damage then it has already been done.  Good luck.

Potential for a knackered ECU!

Fingers crossed that's not the case

Damn yes, it's a 96 model O_O thinking about it the starter probably just turned in reverse hence the car firing and should be / could be OK, there's so many electronics then after this in an spi/mpi - not sure how is best to diagnose, but at some point I'd reconnect the battery to then find out; not sure how to check out the ECU apart from opening it up & looking for component damage.

Once your happy there is nothing burnt out, Reconnect the battery and just fit the terminal, the things that wont like a reverse polarity are Alternator-ECU-Radio, all the other stuff like starter motor will run backwards, its a case now of seeing if the fuses in the ECU blew or not or if its suffered more permanent damage.

Well, not brave enough to connect it up yet. That can wait until I've calmed down!

Opened the bonnet. Alternator looks ok but smells a 'little' strange not hugely.

How do I check if I have an ECU?

If its a '96 you will have an Ecu. That is for certain. Whether its damaged or not is another thing
