Are the bearings bad? Can you feel any roughness when turning? If it were me I'd leave them unless they feel rough. Most damage to bearings happen when they are disturbed (removal/re-install). Seldom starved of grease.  However this is just my opinion.

To avoid damage get a hub puller.

Reason for pulling apart is I'm trying to diagnose a not so good noise whilst moving.
I cannot distinguish where exactly it was coming from....wheel or differential.  Sort of a squeaky/grindy noise from either the RH wheel area or diff...
( it's not the dust shield and I can't recreate while up on stands )
The squeak happens with wheel rotation and doesn't matter if under load or not.
There was indeed a little play in the wheel....and it wasn't at the ball joints.

Hi,

From your pictures, it looks like the inner race of the outer bearing is very rusty, and I suspect some water has got in past the oil seal and dried the grease out. This would account for the noise you're investigating and also why you can't tap the shaft through the back of the hub. It looks like the inner race is siezed to the CV shaft

Try some plus gas or similar penetrating fluid and have another go!!

Cheers,

Steve.

Thank you Stevie......
I am indeed hoping this is the origin of the noise....I do not fancy pulling the engine out again  ( had it out last year )

Hi Spitz,

Yeah...not much fun yanking the engine out regularly!! :ohno:

Hope you get it to bits and a fresh set of wheel bearings sort it out for you!

I made a little progress...but now at a dead stop again.

I held onto the drive shaft and started whacking the back of the hub.......it moved as far as the pictures show....and now stuck.
The hub moves back and forth on the CV about 3/8"....and the inner race ( if that's what we see on the outside ) moves with it.
So what could be holding it?

Obviously not the inner race of the outer bearing.

I don't have a puller big enough to try right now.

and it moves freely to this point

Hi again,

I would just try some penetrating fluid and keep on tapping!!!

Might be worth tapping back & forth for a while in case there is still rust holding the CV shaft to the inner race of the inner bearing!!

Cheers,

Steve.

OK..an update  ( just spent 12 minutes on this and hit the back button by mistake....aaarg )

Borrowed a puller from a neighbour it it came off relatively easy.

Here is the CV shaft....it looks scored, but I can't feel a ridge.

The bearings were not dry...although they could have used a little more grease IMO.
I can't remember where I pulled the larger "ring" from.  Is that a lock ring?...I don't recall a ring for it in the hub...where's it go?

IMG_0544.jpg

Bearings look OK:

IMG_0545.jpg

Races look OK.......a little discoloured.
Can you notice the relatively sharp and slightly upturned edge on the spacer?

IMG_0547.jpg

...maybe a better pic of it.......I found this a bit odd:

IMG_0548.jpg

and the hub..just because I took a pic of it:

IMG_0549.jpg

Now...looking at these, can anyone see an issue....what might have caused the noise I started out hunting for....a squeaky, creaky sound ...heard when car is rolling ( in gear or not...same thing ).  I couldn't recreate the sound by spinning the wheel.
Wheel had a little play ( not ball joints ) but not massive movement.

I can't remember if I fit these bearings or not....bearings are marked "Timken"....so I'm guessing not a cheaper Chinese made part.

And why the heck would things have been so tight on the CV shaft?  Not sure if it was the inner bearing race or the spacer

From what I remember when I did my hubs, the larger split ring acted like a spacer between the inner bearing and the bearing seal.  I also remember my CV shaft having some oil on it.  Probably to aid in getting the hub off and maybe allow the inside of the bearings to move slightly.  I don't remember my spacer having a groove or lip in it.  It kind of looked like a smaller race.  (you can see it sitting on top of the bearing on the right)  I don't believe it should really matter what the spacer looks like, as long as it works at separating the two bearings.

Is it possible the outer bearing race was spinning inside the hub and caused the noise?

Actually, looking at the pictures, there appears to be a groove in the CV shaft that would probably line up with the groove in your bearing spacer.  Maybe some grit or something was caught between the two and caused the noise.

The groove in the spacer looks to be engineered.....the part about the spacer I question is the outside edge that seems worn.
When I flipped the bearing over later( should have taken a pic )...it looks like either the inner race or the spacer was turning and the other wasn't....as the part that matches up to the spacer ( on the bearing ) is discloloured

that spacer looks like its been pressed very hard against the bearing..its got a ridge on the face which from the photo looks like it would fit between the inner and outer race. could also explain the hard job you had getting off...deformed spacer squeezing on CV shaft

maybe the bearing was overtightened when originally fitted.

also the taper bearings appear to have a groove in the middle with a matching groove in the outer race....maybe something contaminated and wore away at both surfaces.

Hi,

From the close up of the CV joint shaft, it still looks as though the outer bearing had been contaminated with water as you can see the rust and a groove in the shaft surface.

It also looks like the outer bearing inner race has been spinning on the shaft surface. You can see marks in the rust and surface of the shaft.

But as mentioned above, the spacer ring may have been corroded to the shaft making removal very difficult!!!

Cheers,

Steve.

P.S. Well done on eventually getting it all to bits in the end...good old perseverence has paid off :proud:

Well....new bearings, seals installed.

I go to put the disc up on the shaft and notice a couple of lines on the conical washer......they were cracks! It came off in three pieces. Now I can't drive for a number more days.....I don't have replacement and can't find anyone with them  :-(
