I'm having trouble removing the swivel hub.

I want to remove it to check/repack the bearings.

It's a 8.4" disc car.

I've released the top and bottom ball joints and the steering end.

The hub does not want to come off!  What,s the trick?

Eagerly awaiting some advice.

Thanks

Is the cv/axle pushing back out of the hub? If not, put the ball joints back in place and tap the end of the drive shaft, where you took the large nut off, with a rubber mallet. That should separate it.

There is some free play there....ie. the cv moves in and out a little.
I've tried hitting with a hammer ( nut on loosely so I don't hit the threads ).....it seems to not want to pop out of the hub...most annoying.
What could be stopping it?

( thanks for the quick reply by the way )

Just finished trying again.....bloody thing does not want to come off.
Is there anything in the hub that would hold the CV in and not allow it to come out?...the only diagram I have is of a drum hub....I don't imagine theres much difference.....(?)

Just the conical washer and friction between the cv and bearing. Just don't hit too hard, as it will slam the bearings into th pot joint too hard.

Well....lightly tapping doesn't work.

Conical washer is off...as is disc.

I'm at a loss......time for a beer

It does sound like stiction on the bearing. When i took off Paddy's front drums i held the swivel assembly away from its position enough so that when i hit the end of the drive shaft no movement was transferred to the pot joints. You may need to hit it harder i'm afraid.

Have a look here.....

Looks to me like the inner bearing is stuck on the splines.......do I have to whack it really hard to get it past this?

I had a hell of a job getting the cv joints off the drive shaft. The "c" clip was extremely tenacious and needed a serious beating to relinquish its grip.

I'm hoping not to take the CV's off the driveshaft...I just want to get the hub off.

It does look like its been on there a while so more force will be needed. If it does not go then you may have to go down the CV joint removal route.

But I'd rather not have the axle come out of the inner CV or have the boot pull of and drop the balls.

Sounds good....but not much room in there to whack at the hub from behind.
Ah....the UK is waking up now...0100 here...off to bed.

Will have a go at it in the morning....mid afternoon for most of you :-)
