Hi Ben, you drilled a hole for the clamp since you said the panel was rubbish. If you didn't do that would you have had to clamp the panel from the inside, and how would that work?

I probably would have screwed it down from above inside or just used the shaft of my hammer to press it down tight and then weld it whilst holding it

Nice job on wheel arch! just done the O/S one today +boot floor repair panel and battery box, N/s to
do Monday. I used MMachine repair panels & battery box and Magnum c*** edge repair?? couldn't
stretch complete boot floor, got to say MMachine parts are superb fit relay nice along wheel arch,
pity they don't make more bits and still supply some magnum parts.
Just wondering are you going to fit the 2 strengthening plates under the rear seatbelt corner brackets

Cheers James.
I did a bit more yesterday. Fancied a bit of a change so decided to tackle this
I gave it a quick wire brush just to get the flaky bits off
marked out back to sound steel
And cut the rotten bit out
I came across a bit of a problem cutting down towards the gutter as there wasn't enough room to get the disc in with out hitting the cant rails and gutters so i drilled a series of small holes
And then broke it away
Then the edge can be neatly filed straight
I then ground away the edge from in the gutter and peeled it out
And then prepared a repair piece to go in, roughly cut to size
Then i drew round the edge with a pencil to mark the cut lines
Next i had to straighten the edges from the drill holes
Then i cleaned up and primed the cant rails and gutters
As the lip on the repair piece that sits in the gutter is quite narrow and i can't roller weld it as it would have been done at the factory, i opted for elongated plug weld holes
They will be a bit more substantial than just a small round hole. They could have been much neater but i was rushing to get it done
and then welded in
And proof that rushing these things gets you nowhere, here is a picture after grinding down. i used a body file to show you the problem
It's HORRIBLE!!
Now i'm cursing to myself kicking tools round and just in a general foul mood. Now it's going to take me the time i saved and more to sort it.
Any way, no point wasting more time so i set to sorting it out by raising and lowering the high and low spots
Still a long way to go but it's showing promise
And then after half hour or so, the main part is looking better. I still have the edges to do and a bit more here and there but i think i got away with it
Moral of the story is, take your time when attempting these delicate repairs. That's the last job i shall be rushing. I was almost tempted not to share this..

This is one of the coolest sections that you've done. I always wondered how people fixed part of the roof when it had gotten rusty.

Cheers Vinay.
It's straight forward to do, if not a bit fiddly.
The trick is to work very slowly to avoid distortion. Advice i should have taken myself

Looks good considering you were not happy with it .
Thanks. I have 2 other corners to repair so ill take my time more with those
I'm still hugely impressed with your work Ben. I love this rebuild: reminds me a) of my old 25, & b) why I am glad that I bought a plastic project!
Cheers. It's starting to take shape and the rust is slowly getting less. If it was plastic, it would have been finished a long time ago..

I haven't welded the gutter yet. The repair isn't finished as i still need to pick up some low spots and sort a few grinding marks out. The primer was just to protect it for now. I'm still going for a filler-less repair so lot's more to do.
Ill probably finish it this afternoon.
Cheers

Great work on the arches! Mine have two largish holes in the top on both sides, is it easier to remove the whole arch rather than mess around with fixing a very inaccesible hole?
