Quite a big update today. I managed to get everything done that i had planned to which is a first!
I had to pack up now as i need to go out at 5 to collect what i hope will be the Mini's savior...
Anyway, i started by finishing the welding on the c post seam here.
I sprayed on some anti splatter spray as i didn't 1st time and ended up with blobs of stray weld stuck to the quarter panel in some difficult to get at areas. This spray is messy buy easier to clean up than splatter!
Then i welded up the remaining plug holes and linished it back. This was a pain to do on the seam as it's difficult to get power tools in to get them nice and flat. i used a combination of a 1mm cutting disk (don't try this at home kids) a belt sander and a flap disc.
Then tried the seam trim on.
Then i cleaned back the paint to see what lurked beneath as it was a bit wobbly. Strangely enough, beneath the filler was sound straight metal
I then contorted myself into the boot and cleaned the back of the seam up where there was a combination of old seam sealer, burnt paint and all that.
Came up ok.
Moving on, i flipped the car on it's side and set about sorting the problem with the a panel and flitch panel.
Here is the problem
So i did this with a 1mm cutting disc to hopefully allow the A panel to sit back in line with the door and face straight on instead of at an angle.
Then used a c clamp to pull the a panel in line and a pair of mole grips to hold the flanges in line and slit the flitch again to remove the excess material.
Once that was done, i welded up the gap.
Then ground up the welds using both the belt sander and 1mm cutting disc to get this.
and then welded the bottom of the a panel to the door step.
After a quick linish with the flap disc, things are looking much more healthy.
So the next job was the outer sill.
I started by cleaning back the paint on the door step flange with the poly abrasive wheel in the drill
Then sprayed on some Zinc.
Whilst that was drying, i grabbed the outer sill and drilled lots of 6mm holes ready for plug welding
Then sprayed on the zinc and put it on the wall in the sun to dry
Then laid my hands on loads of clamps and put it in place on the car
and then checked it was flush with the door step flange which it was.
and then plug welded it on.
It was tricky to do the plug welds to the floor because for some reason, the edge didn't want to sit tight to the floor so i used a combination of large clamps and the shaft of the hammer to hole everything in tight before carefully plug welding them.
It went ok in the end, just took AGES
Plenty of penetration on the step
And the floor
I started running out of time so i set about cleaning up the welds on the front 2/3rds of the sill for now. ill attack the rest tomorrow
Just these few to go and it will be done. I am going to weld up the gaps on the heelboard end too.
Then a very light dusting of zinc over the bare bits and that's a rap
So that's all for today.
More tomorrow....
