Right, i have now finalised what needs to be done to get the panels into their final position.

It turns out that the bottom of the windscreen boxing panel that i replaced is fowling against the top of the inner wing behind the dash top rail and that is what is stopping it going over.

Ill get all the panels taken back off hopefully sunday and then i should soon be ready to finally get them welded on!

Stripped it all down again today to sort the issue with the boxing panel

You can see where the problem lies

Which was causing the top of the inner wing to sit proud

Back to basics.

And then i re-shaped the boxing panel.

P1060850_zpsy6x9pzf5.jpg

with that done, i stripped the e-coat from the A post and reinforcing panel and then marked out the plug holes with a marker pen

P1060852_zpsuvzympku.jpg

And then drilled some 6mm holes using a step cutter

P1060853_zpsnjcfbhxm.jpg

I then had to de-burr the backs of the holes

Before:

After a tickle with a 1mm cutting disc

P1060857_zps5yloqna1.jpg

And then on with some zinc primer

P1060863_zpsffaednul.jpg

And the bare metaled reinforcer

P1060859_zpsixvq3kmb.jpg

And Zinc

Then tried it in place

I made 2 small mistakes with plug hole placement but it's no bother.

And tomorrow, i need to replace this flange and then i can build it back up again

Cheers

Does anyone have any pictures of the back edge of the flitch without an A panel fitted so i can see how it fits top and bottom?

I can't compare with the other side on mine as it's missing.

I need to see how the flange that the A panel wraps around sits in relation to the square cut out on the front edge of the door step flange before i weld anything.

Cheers

Ben

Pre strip down pics might be best. These are original size but cropped

Looking again, it looks like my inner wing needs to go up a bit

Ben, Looks like its too low to me. The leading edge of the inner wing should sit inside over the sill seam.

It is too low but i know i'm not going to be able to bring it up enough to make it where it should be.

I think i'm going to have to trim it and move the bottom up to make up the difference.

Seems a bit odd its not in the right position as your hinge bolt holes line up vertically.

I know. The whole inner wing is a poor fit. i wonder if i have a dud one?

The first thing i noticed is that the bottom of the flange that the A panel wraps round is not squared off and the bottom of the inner wing where it fits to the toe board and floor is about 10mm away from fitting flush to the floor etc.

Like you say though, the hinge holes line up well and the door is about the right height etc.

I did think that the floor/inner sill and A post might be too high which would be a major bummer but it is perfectly level.

It's really puzzling me and i don't want to have to cut the bottom off of the inner wing to move it up unless i have no other choice..

Ill have to put on my thinking cap

Cheers mate. I will get there. This is the first Mini i have worked on body wise and although most aspects are just common sense, this got me wondering. After all, i don't want to weld anything in this crucial area until i'm certain.
