So yesterday I made a 400 mile round trip to collect one of the most Marmite cars I have ever laid eyes on. Fortunately I absolutely love it!

Its an Indespension (as in the trailer company) Jiffy. Although the company wasn't called Indespension at the time. It was a kit car offered in the 80s that you could buy in bits or as a rolling chassis.

I have a feeling this one was bought as a kit as the Mini bits are significantly older than the registration date. Ive managed to date the front subframe, engine and loom to a 1973 Mini 1000 and even have the registration plate of said deceased Mini. The fuel tank is a pick-up one and the speedo is from something a bit later I think as its an offset twin clock.

As you can see its currently in pieces but its all there (mostly!). Im hoping to have an MOT on it in time for Himley. However, I feel a Shifty moment coming on here! How long ago was that MPi meant to be ready Sean??

Current list of missing/replacement parts required:

  • Wiring - The loom is there but there isnt much left that useable and the cabling is pretty crusty. Ill probably wire something up from scratch using the old plugs and relays. It has no heater, radio, or washer motor (bellow washer pump!) so the loom is going to be pretty basic! The ignition system is still wired up without the ignition barrel so the lights is the main thing to do.

  • 4/5 New tyres

  • Copper brake and clutch lines for master cylinders.

  • Fuel line

  • Horn

  • Ignition barrel (and keys!) and stalks.

  • Muffler - It has piping right up to the backbox but no backbox!

  • Air filter/housing - Might just go aftermarket cone for simplicity.

  • Door seals - standard Mini ones.

Thats about it really! Im going to have another look round it tonight and check if there is anything else missing. Ill keep this thread updated and if anyone has any of the above parts going cheap drop me a PM.

Thanks! I forgot to mention the plans:

I want to sand down and repaint the wood slats in a dark green and replace the bed floor which is made of rotten ply-board at the moment! Repaint the ironmongery in black and replace a few missing catches on the bed. At the moment the sides cant hold themselves up.

Then its going to get a camouflage-style vinyl wrap! I think it will look the dogs doo-dahs!

Pah, the whole point of having a deadline is to know just how far behind schedule you are!!

Looks pretty good, better get a wiggle on if you want to make Himley!!

Took some more photos this afternoon:

20130503_172613_zps011f04e2.jpg

One 998cc A-Series complete with dubious looking dynamo and remote gear change. Im glad there isnt much current draw on that dynamo to be honest!

20130503_172602_zpsc189b6ff.jpg

Fibreglass dashboard to go with a rather spartan cab. The only creature comfort is a rubber mat for flooring!

20130503_172804_zpsf801d184.jpg

Rather worn looking MG Metro steering wheel. A heater unit is meant to sit to the right of the steering column where that slot is however it didnt come with one in, the plumbing is done without one and Im stripping those wires out of the loom. So I will probably fill that space up!

20130503_172936_zps327e766e.jpg

Flat-bed with doors, bonnet and fuel tank.

20130503_172809_zpsb27c5aac.jpg

Rear springs with a solid axle.

20130503_173030_zpse59e20e3.jpg

Original Jiffy sticker on the nose.

I also found this rather unusual mark. It seems someone has brazed it with a coin of some description!

I made a start on the wiring loom tonight. There isnt much left of it apart from the main plugs under the dashboard and the voltage regulator. Luckily all the main plugs are there although I spent 90 minutes tonight soldering the speedo plug back onto the loom!

Probably will keep the seats yeah. They are in pretty good nick. Unless something nicer comes up for cheap enough.

Spent the last few hours sorting out the wiring. Its pretty much finished apart from the bits of the loom which can only be put in in the car.

It was the one from Retro Rides yeah. I was debating buying it from pretty much the day it was listed! It was the distance that put me off but I took the plunge in the end.
