Blowing Exhaust Manifold - New Gasket/sealant?

Best Answer petehuws , 02 May 2013 - 10:02 AM

Same as Kernow above.  Never used anything other than the gasket, ensure your cylinder head inlet/outlet surface is free from crap and gunge, (same for the inlet/manifold) and as long as the flange thickness of your manifold/inlets are the same then all should go together quite nicely, torque the manifold nuts to 14ftlbs and you should be just as sealed as a ducks ***.

Hello. I've got a 1992 SPi Cooper with what seems to be a blown gasket on the exhaust manifold.

I've ordered a new gasket and bolts from minispares but I'm wondering if I need to use any sealant on it. I'm not sure about the mating surfaces yet having not taken yet taken it apart. What would people recommend all being well? I've heard differing opinion on dry gaskets or using Permatex Copper spray.

Thanks for any help!

Seeing as your car has a car, be careful when using sealant as some kinds can damage it

Never needed to use any kind of sealant, only time I see problems is when a LCB from a quality manufacturer is fitted i.e Maniflow with the thick flanges and the standard inlet manifold is slightly thinner so when assembled the large washer does not apply equal pressure on the joint, in this case some have stepped the washer so it sits flat. Has yours got a LCB on it?  Also check the engine stabliser bushes for wear

Thanks for the advice chaps. I am waiting for my overdue fiancée to drop our first baby, I expect it'll happen just as I get it up on the axle stands tomorrow evening...
