hey there i recently made an exhaust system bout 2 yrs ago and recently overhauled my engine so changed all the manifold gaskets and so on.. but ive been getting a really bad exhaust smell in the car and its starting to bother me.. it gets stronger the faster i go.. i notice the flexible piping has black stains all over it but im not sure if its paint or carbon thats coming out.. anyone have any advice on how to check? im driving a 1978 mini clubman and the piping is fitted to a LCB manifold..

If you put your hand over the tailpipe can you hear any exhaust blow in the system thats where your leak is, and its finding its way into the car.

That could work against you as by opening the window you cause a depression in the car and draw more exhaust fumes in. but I know why you said it and both windows would be my advice as well, I'd get it sorted asap.

yeah planning to get it to the exhaust shop.. i have a feeling its the flexible joint because when i sent the car for painting they wrapped the whole exhaust hence the rest of the exhaust is silver and the flexible is black.. lemme upload a pic for you guys..

an exhaust leak leaves a thick black soot on the area its leaking from...check around the manifold and all joints...there is a hissing noise from the leaking area

If it will run with the tail pipe blocked off its coming out somewhere, and your smelling exhaust fumes in the car. Get someone else to block it off while you investigate.

yeah good ideas guys.. i will try and find the black soot as well as the sound.. ive been having this issue for a long time now and every different exhaust shop i bring it to says theres no leak.. last time there was a leak from the Y joint but then i welded it and yet still.. i got a crazyy idea.. what if i wrap the flexible and Y joint with foil paper and see if the smell gets lessened? do you think thats a good idea?

Foil wont provide a gas tight seal though, so better to get it somewhere where you can demonstrate it running with your hand over the tailpipe, its got to be coming out somewhere?
