ino yeh i was thinking if i get a solid mk3 shell and convert it to a mk1 shell wouldnt this be less welding and work then rebuilding this shell? why couldnt you be closer i would just drop it of at yours and say here you are lol

Yeah it would in a sense be easier but still a fair ammount of welding either way to make it a proper mk1 shell, as finer details to finish off at a later date you could reframe from converting bts like the rear bulkhead and tunnel/crossmember area and focus on the main tasks like the door surround frames, front bulkhead and crossmember which are more so key point to spot out first on a mk1 replica type of car (most dont convert the door frames)

Haha no at the mo, i have bugger all room at the minute haha

there is a way the shell could probably be saved but i have not got the skills and time to weld this up so i would rather give it to someone that could weld it up for me or get anouther shell i no its nice to restore the original shell but by the time i have finished with it it will be like buying a new shell anyway there wont be any original panels left on it apart from the roof panel lol so im stuck for abit untill ino what way to go.

Well in that case, take care removing all the parts off the sheel , limit the damage as much as possible and then get yourself a new shell and build two into one from the mk1 shell parts left over

for whats left of the panels i might aswell leave them on the shell lol the roof panel is in great condition so might put that up for sale if i chop it up and the bulkhead is ok but will i need these panels on my new one? and is there any difference in a mk1 shell then a mk3? ino its got different lights and external door hinged and etc but are the windows bigger or anything i will need to do to the new shell to make it look like a mk1?

and your from bolton aint you? cheers tom

The doors and rear opening windows are larger on the mk3, also the rear quarter panel and b pillar are also different.

you would actually need to change the whole side of the body to do it properly.

to convert a mk3 shell properly into a mk1 you'd have to change the front panel, wings, bonnet, scuttle, parts of the bulkhead, a post, b post, a panels, door steps, sections of the floor,  rear quarters, rear window, rear lights, boot lid and the boot floor.

There are quite a few differences from mk1 to mk3 tom, the main one's being the doors and A-B posts.

To convert a new body (i.e mk3) to mk1 spec you'll need to basically chop the lower Apost and all the B-post out and replace with mk1 spec panels, the A-post isnt an issue though as all the panels needed are available new, The B-post however is a panel you can't buy new and therefore isnt a MUST you keep the old ones to weld into the new shell so as the mk1 doors will fit.

The front and rear bulkheads are different yes, The front is of less complex shape with less things like fuse boxer on it and the bonnet hinges are mounted in a different location as to mk3> minis (Have a look at all the differences on the mk1 shell to your recent resto project and you'll see theres quite a few things haha)

A alteration which can be easily overseen is the roof inner structure frame (Again, go and have a look) ts a constant rounded shape as apposed to the straight frame in the mk3> minis which only runs as two ribs with a interior light in one.

There are a few more things but nothing you need to worry about as they can be altered at a later stage when the door apetures are completed

Cheers

Cliff

A good way to start tom is by asking in a fresh topic so everyone can input on whats what on the mk1's and maybe joining the mk1 forum and ask there also, then dig in and get the work done! ;)
