Hi all, in the title really, I was driving yesterday and the engine just randomly cut out, I tried to start it up and it ran for about another 10 mins then the same thing again. Every time I try to start it up and run it again the time it runs for seems to be less and less. I left it for a while then tried again but the same problem, probably ran for about 5 mins then cut out.
It only started doing it after the car was stood for a while during a rear subframe change.
It has new ignition parts, points, condenser e.c. I think it's getting fuel, the fuel filter is filled with petrol so it's deffinatly getting that far. Checked the plugs and there the right gap, good brown colour. Air filter is new, recently set the timing, don't think it's that tho as its been running sound untill yesterday. Anyone know what else it could be?
All help much appreciated !
Thanks josh

Has the points gap closed up? Loose connections at the coil? Next time it stops - immediately pour a little petrol down the carb and crank it. If it starts - petrol feed was the problem! If not - look to the ignition....

Ill check the points when I get back from work later, I only adjusted them about a month ago. Shall I just pour the petrol down the neck of the carb? So ill have to have the filter off ?

Do you have a HS type carb, I.e. with a fuel reservoir on the left of the carb?

If so, the second it cuts out switch off the ignition and undo the three screws, take off the lid and see how much fuel is in there. If it is low, then see if the float valve is clear by blowing though it. If it is clear then I would suggest the hose between the carb and the fuel filter is blocked, or partially blocked.

Our mini was doing the same as yours for a few days then eventually got to the point it would run for thirty seconds then almost immediately only about five seconds. But when it initially started, it would idle for ages just fine but not while driving.

Turns out this fuel hose has come apart inside and probably because a previous owner had used a jubilee clip to hold the hose to the carb.

If your fuel filter is vertical, I.e. fuel comes in from the bottom and flows out the top, the fact it is full could also indicate this. On ours, the filter is only 3/4 full when fuel is flowing freely. Depends on the filter though.

What couldn't hurt is to change the hose and clips anyway and clean the fuel reservoir and float/lid/valve anyway.

Cheers

Ian

Cheers for that Ian.
But of an update, from what I can tell I don't think it's the fuel, though I may be wrong, it's a hs4 that I have. Iv noticed my heater valve is leaking coolant and it may be dripping on something if the electrics causing it to cut out? Quite a lot off coolant had leaked out so i topped it up. I just started it up about an hour ago after leaving it over night and it started fine and ran fine. Let it run up to temp and took it for a quick drive, no problems. Drove it for a while more under different driving conditions, slow and low rpm for a bit then gave it some and thrashed it a bit mainly too see if it made a difference. But no it didn't cut out once. I don't think low coolant would cause it to cut out... But the leaking coolant possibly dripping on something electrical could ? Then again i may be completely wrong :-)
