Nearing the end of a 3-year rebuild and I'm hooking the electrics back up... but have forgotten where a few bits go!
Can anyone tell me what the spade connector on the side of the alternator is for (see pic) and if does needs connected to anything then what coloured wire goes to it? There's a white/black close to it, but I'm not sure what's that's for.

Also, am I correct in thinking that I don't need to use the threaded stud on the alternaternator as my primary 12V charging feed - i.e. for most purposes all that's needed is the 3-wire plug in connector?

Cheers,
Colin.

It's the warning lamp terminal for cars using the stud to supply power I believe, so don't connect anything to it. You MUST, and I can't stress this enough, MUST properly insulate all the unused supply terminals.

Thanks for the reply/clarification Dan. A bit of Googling (and TMF searching) last night led me to beleive it was either a connection for a suppressor, or for the warning lamp... i.e. very different confusing answers!
And yes I do plan on insulating the unused posts before hooking up the battery and firing up the engine (I'll double insulate them with heatshring then rubber cap them).

Stay tuned for some more wiring questions in anew post... I still have a couple of dangling wires around the front end of the harness :o

Oh I'm sorry, you are right. It is the supressor connection, which I think makes it the same as the W terminal (single phase output) rather than the D terminal which is for the warning lamp.

So no need to connect anything to that spade terminal (no need for a supressor on my engine as I doubt I'll fit any ICE/stereo... 'because it'll struggle to be heard over my 1380 with s/c drops :) ).

Well it is actually not allowed for your car to cause interference to anything, not just the equipment inside it. That includes peoples TVs that you are driving past. It might not need one though, they don't always.

That really depends upon the age of the car and the country it's in ;-) but yes throwing splat into the RF spectrum is generally not appreciated.

I'm an ex-local (from Edinburgh and moved to USA in 2009)... but still need my daily fix of TMF ;-)
