So , i have taken delivery of my first classic mini and already confused , mainly by the heater conrols !

Can't seem to work out what controls the temperature setting , as no hot air came out !

Also dash air vents don't seem to work as seems to escape through heater box housing ?

Regardless , a very happy camper !!

the air vents are just fresh air vents, not connected to the heater, the heater is meant to blow air out the box its where the warmth comes from, blows across floor and as heat rises heats the car up

the cable like choke on the other side of switch panel is on the early cars pull for cold in for heat and visa versa on later rover cars

Also check that your cable is actually operating the valve under the bonnet

Have someone pull the cable while you look

My cable didnt move the valve when I first got mine

It's quite simple, you pull the control knob on the right hand side of the switch panel outwards, and it opens a valve that flows hot water from the engine into the heater. The ON/OFF switch on the heater controls the blower/fan, that pushes the warm air out of the heater and into the car. The direction control on the heater itself is to direct the warm air between CAR/SCREEN and OFF. "CAR" directs it down to the foot wells, where as "SCREEN" flows it up through plastic ducts to the windscreen demisters.

The air vents at either end of the dash are fresh air vents fed by ducts behind the front grille and are not connected to the heater.

if you have the heater in the screen position and its not heating then simply follow the black pipes from the sides of the heaters up behind your dash, they sometimes have a tendancy of coming loose in my experience and just heating up your dash!

It's the brake fluid level warning lamp, which illuminates when the brake fluid lebel in the reservoir is low. The switch is there just to test the bulb/circuit to ensure that it works.

i get the heater controls on the blower etc. the bit i didnt get was if the knob on the right of the switch panel was push or pull for hot because it didnt make a differance on my 1st car, it was always hot lol

Why? Was the valve it was connected to stuck in the open position, or was it just not connected to the valve and so not actually doing anything?

A very common Mini noise. Of course they're the wrong wheels [cue debate!] but the most likely cause is you need to rectify tired and collapsed front suspension cones.

Cable tie or a few self tappers will stop that from ever happening :-)
