You'll more than likely need an oil cooler onec the sump gaurd is fitted. Also skid the battery box, or do what I have done and cut 3" out of it.

finally, here are the pics of the Debden Targa last Sunday... no particular preparation required for this type of events but, as mentioned above, at least a sumpguard is highly recommended!!

Superb photo's and just goes to show that there are forms of motorsport out there that require minimal prep but give maximum return.

from what i can see on the net, targa rallies seem to something only really run by Chelmsford motor club, does anyone know of any around the midlands?

Targa Rallies
7.1.9. Targa Rally. A schedule timed rally where the
principal competition comprises the competitor’s
performance on Specials Tests.
Targa Rally
16.6. Targa Rallies must comply with the following;
16.6.1. Not include any Standard Sections.
16.6.2. Regularity Sections may be included.
16.6.3. Classes must be based on the ability of
Competitors (masters, experts, non-experts, and
novices), and may be sub-divided by vehicle cubic
capacity and/or age.
16.6.4. Special Tests must comply with 10.6.
This is what the Blur Book says about Targas, plus everything else that applies to road rallies. Many historic events are now also using targa permits to allow more modern cars to take part.
I can only talk about Chelmsford MC events, the last one was run by West Suffolk MC with support from Chelmsford... this CMC events don't include any regularity.
I personally think it was a great move by the MSA to create this permit, as I explained above they are amazing value for money and they can be done in your daily car without risking any damage... well, you know what I mean!
To some people like me it's the closest I will get to some kind of stage rallying...

They do look like superb fun. How many 'stage' miles do you reckon there was? Just trying to gauge what sort of size the venue would have to be if one was to be organised elsewhere.
Can see it now.....TMF Targa rally??????

My speedo is not very accurate and I don't have a tripmeter yet... I had a look on the CMC forums from previous events, the last one at Woodbridge in March involved 20 competitive miles plus 10-15 for linking the tests.
If you do a double drive, that is you drive and then navigate, it obviously doubles up, a full on day!

Seeing as we've started to talk about prepping mini's for rallying.......
What are the essentials for people to do to make a mini cope with rallying (be it road, stage or historic rallying)
I'll start the ball rolling with echoing Keith above.....
SUMP GUARD (and not one of those pretend show ones....get one thats made for rallying, not show boating)
GOOD BRAKES (Uprated pads and racing brake fluid will do....4 pots and bigger discs if allowed)
RELIABLE ENGINE (No point having mega power if it all goes up in smoke...to finish first...first you must finish)
What else peeps?
If you're doing stage events in a stripped out car ;
Intercom
helmet net
and the co-driver will probably appreciate some form of time keeping equipment (Halda tripmaster or similar)
Map light/poti
Spare wheels tyres.

Also skid the battery box, or do what I have done and cut 3" out of it.
Ours has been relocated into a composite box where the back seat squab used to be. I'm now thinking that probably won't comply with HRCR regs either....!!

To be honest, watching the video you linked to & looking at those excellent photos, it looks like the only major difference between a Targa rally & many single venue stage rallies may be a slightly lower average speed (& a much lower average entry fee, & no MSA 'go rallying' pack, rally school assessment day & overpriced comp. licence to get!!)
Were there any 'full on' stage prepared cars taking part, or do they have to be road rally spec at most (ie fully trimmed interiors).
It does look great fun & excellent value for money!

PROPERLY MOUNTED SEATS AND HARNESSES
Which must be MSA approved & 'in date' for stage cars.
Stage rally cars must have an MSA logbook.

Indeed. Road rally rules are more relaxed and full trim is not required... the Sierra you see in the video is a staged prepared car and I've seen other stage cars in previous ones...
as you said the difference is that the tests are designed not to average over 30mph, with tight turns. You don't get a chance to be in 4th gear and very rarely on 3rd. Plus a bit of navigation is involved, some test diagram reading skills required as you don't have as many cones as on a single venue stage rally to guide you.
it is the perfect next step between autosolo/autotests and Endurance rallying

It will be great if this does catch on & we get more events across the country. I really fancy a go...!!

where are you based? Next CMC one is on 19th July at Wethersfield airfield...
I'm afraid I'll be missing that one as I'm due to be a dad for the first time at the end of June!

Congratulations! My first born is getting married in the middle of July! Where does the time go...?!
