yes. if it was corroded badly, it may have fallen off, in which case you might start looking for the cable's "eyes" on the gearbox or head and the wing or bulkhead
weve looked everywhere around the bulkhead and gearbox area but cant even find the cables eyes, so at the moment were fitting one with the sort of wire you would ground the house with, and ive ordered a proper one from wood and pickett so hopefully the one were making will last that long

If it has fallen off as described and it was the only one then You would have problems as the cars earth would find the next path the choke and throttle cable are prime examples, while you solve this missing earth cable, you could put a new one across the stabliser to be sure.
it must have been like this for ages, yet we have never noticed any problems with the way it ran until we tried fitting a electronic ignition, and now weve sort of found a whole load of jobs

thanks everyone for all your help, weve temporarily made an earth and weve tested it before there was 0.5v lurking on the engine and now theres zero so it seems to be working, so untill we recieve the proper one this ones going to stay in there for now. thanks again everyone
Just list how you found the 0.5v lurking as it may help others in the same boat.

hi
this is how i found the 0.5v
you need the points to be closed so current is being drawn through the coil and measure the voltage between chasis and engine and this is how we found 0.5v
