hi all
i want to put a quick release steering wheel on my mini for extra security..
i have a standard wheel on it at the moment and i want to know what i need to do and
where the best place to get the items from..i have seen them on minis and been looking on ebay
but not sure what to get as some of them seems to extend the wheel closer to the drivers position..
anyone on here had these fitted and could tell me what to do and get?
many thanks

you will need a quick release boss specifically for a classic mini, then obviously the correct steering wheel for the boss.

quick steering release bosses, usually come in two parts. 1 connects to the steering wheel and the other on the steering column then put them together and your away.

be careful though, cheap eBay ones have a lot of play in them !!!

Well worth getting a decent one, there is a video on a Seat forum of a seat at santa pod going down the strip and his quick release wheel comes off and he ends up going over the fence between track and onlookers and I think some people ended up in hospital

yes very dangerous, same with cheap fake OMP/SPARCO/MOMO steering wheels.

they will bend and change shape. especially in minis where there are no power steering.

You won't be able to get one to fit your standard wheel unless you do some more involved mods to the column.

There are a few options....

A weld on one, best option of you don't want the wheel closer.

One that fits to the column like a standard boss (personally i've never seen them for a mini, PurpleXrA1NX may have though?!) again this is good if you don't want the wheel close.

Finally there are ones that fit between the boss and wheel. I have one of these but it will bring the wheel closer. Not a problem for me as my seats will be mounted behind the seat crossmember. Mines a NRG one, very well made.

Obviously these will all involve an aftermarket wheel. Most of the quick release bosses fit 60mmx6 pattern (might be 70mm, can't remeber).

I got mine from a group buy on turbo mini's.

A mini specific QR boss isn't needed. A good quality QR boss such as British made B&G one, mounted to a mini boss is fine. The B&G boss has a safety pin to stop it becoming detached by accident so is ideal for road use. I have mine mounted to a Momo boss and have had no problems, but I did need to fit a drop bracket to get the steering wheel in the right place because of the thickness of the bits. I also have a weld on type QR boss on our work project. That is also a generic one and is very good, but it MUST be welded on to the column by a VERY GOOD welder. B&G sell direct to the public, demon tweeks, JJC Race and ,any others do the weld on type.

Yep, it's normally a two part jobby we do on the autograss buggys, the ones we use slide over the existing column and then welded on (we weld them on in quarters opposite each over which is strong enough) then the wheel slides on the spindle and locks into the newly, welded joint
