I see lots of post here refering to "Twin Carbs Are A Pain To Setup"

Lets just look at this and understand why.

Twin SUs the most popular twin carb setup on classic minis in either the most popular models HS2s 1/1/4s (Standard on the 997/998 Coopers and 970/1071 and 1275 Cooper s) and HS4s 1 1/2s ( Not fitted to any Production Road Car off the assembly line) and when setup correctly they shound not be a pain to setup neither should they keep requiring adjustments to the mixture or the tick over speed.

The primary reason for all the problems of a inconsistant tick over is attributed to worn carburettors which require a overhaul! The butterfly shafts are either suffering from wear or worn bushings drawing in air causing a fluctuating or worn carb bodies and worn jet assemblies with incorrect jet centralisation and needles, this with worn out linkages is the reasons behing the popular misconception of balancing and setting up SU's is difficult to do and requires ongoing attention.

So if your SUs have a different idle speed every time you take the revs up, or the set you bought off ebay is a nightmare then check all the spindles, bushings and linkages, as thats where 99% of the time the problem lies.

As I had preceded the statement with "Quote Twin SUs the most popular twin carb setup on classic minis" I didn't see any need to? I figured I not be speaking to owners of MGB's, Marina TC's, Triumph TR's, Triumph Dolomites and loads of others, in this section of a Mini forum.

But your correct in that twin carbs on all makes of British 50/60/70 cars would have indeed been fitted with twin SUs

I had a pair of HS2s on my 1275. Think they were originally from a 998 Cooper, and they had been rebuilt before I got them.

Changed the jets, set them up once, and they were fine for about a year until I went 16v.

Its never a laugh where your involved DILLIGAF trying to put 2 cats to fight, or you don't word your answers very good one or the other, and its not just me who has noticed it either.

I'm not being funny and I know your very knowledgeable but you come across very negative in your reply sometimes and thats why you get comments like you do.

Anyway this is not the place for this discussion.

as a general rule, hs2's are fine 99% of the time, hif's are fine 99.9% of the time and hs4's are shot 99% of the time!! it's all down to the throttle return spring.
