Ok so you on a carburettor engine. Have you checked the slide in the dash pot rises and falls ok, is your car on points and condensor or electronic after market or OE Electronic Distributor? Any history on service items like has the points if its on points been replaced with the condensor?

When you try and rev it does it miss or just rev to just above idle at 1000rpm and remain smooth?

Seen condensors break down and limit the engine revs before, but lets see what your engine is and points or electronic

thanks. yes its a carburettor engine and runs on Points. the engine will cut out straight away unless the throttle is fully down it will remain smooth just over 1000 but wont go higher. many thanks

Well if its on points the first thing I would check is just that, and if suspect a new set and condenser and check the timing, and move on from there.

might well be the piston in the carb sticking. Mine did it last week and refused to idle.

So did you try/check the above? Did you need to top up the oil in the dashpot?

You didn't mention if you did
