He want's to find TDC, if a DTI gauge is good enough for JanSpeed. It's good enough for me.

If you fit a DTI in the spark plug hole you're likely to ruin it

How do you find tdc on a new engine build, when you don't have a cam installed yet, and you want the correct
tdc?
I use a DTI on the topof the piston, directlyabove the gudgeon pin centre line, take an angular reading at about 0.040" down the bore on the "upstroke" then turn it over the top until it drops down to 0.040" and take another angular reading, add the 2 readings and divide by 2, turn it all the way around until you get to this "new" reading on your vernier timing wheel, your crankshaft is now at true TDC,
NOTE !
1) Measurements MUST be taken directly over the gudgeon centre line.
2) Both dislacements MUST be the same figure, and not too small, not too big either.
3) All measurements MUST be taken by turning the crankshaft in the same direction.
4) Do not be tempted in to turning the crankshaft back the other way....
5) Mount all measuring equipment securely and all DTI's inline with the direction of measurent, ie vertically on a piston crown

Isn't it better to get it correct to start with, if you look on the bottom pulley and timing cover you may (earlier engines as Cooperman has stated will have this on the flywheel) find timing marks, just line up the little notch on the bottom pulley with the zero pointer, this is the longer point of the "bunch"

The ECU has a large adjustment range. It doesn't need a DTi gauge and to be super acurate
Can it be adjusted in both directions ?

Take no.1 plug out, get a pencil and position it through the plug hole so that it is as vertical as possible.
Turn the engine until the pencil is as high out of the plug hole as it will go. Mark the position on the front pulley against a fixed point. Repear a few times and take the average.
That is quite close enough as it will be within a couple of degrees + or -.
Set the ignition to nominal, say 6 degrees BTDC and run the engine. Fine tune/map it accurately on a rolling road when convenient.
I hope this helps you and is an answer you can accept.

Please check that BOTH valves are closed, you have two TDC's, one with valves open and one with valves closed, which is the one you want.
That I dont know, I will have to check withe the Nodiz guys.
