To clear up something, The Rally cross mini was made using parts from a Longbridge made 4wd Moke, not the Ant. The Ant gearbox had a true transfer box, which would be very difficult to fit into the Mini. Also the engine in the Ant was tipped at some 15 degrees. It also carried the steering rack and the front torsion bar suspension.
The 4wd Moke prototype was made at the same time as the twini Mokes under Issigonis. This predates the Australian 4wd Mokes, which were based on this design.
I believe the ST 4wd mini was put together tocompete with the Ford 4wd rally crossbars (Capris!). A last attempt for Minis to be competitive.
The Ant had no subframes, just a very strong body to which everything was bracketed to. It would have been a formidable small 4wd off roader.

Artful read this link I found onmk-1 forum page 6 - parts came from Moke, not Ant.
Also from page 4 is lots of info about Ant transmission as this guy is attempting to put Ant transmission in a Moke. He is also Talking with Spider in Aus about that gearbox you pictured.

he does make his own diff casing and pinion gear etc, its an awsome build, but you would have to have some serious equipment and skills to do this!
