Hello everyone,

I apologise if this has been asked before but I spent about half an hour searching for a thread with no luck.

My question is, is it possible to fit the Mk2 rear lights with no reverse light onto a later (1988 ish) Mini?
Would it leave a massive hole where the old, bigger light was?

If this has been asked before, I would appreciate it if you could point me in the direction of the thead.

Many thanks
Harry

Yeah, they can be fitted. The hole is the same size for MK2/3 and MK4 lights so no problems there. You'll have to mess with the wiring a little bit though. There is no legal requirement to have a reverse light fitted either, it'll pass an MOT without one.

there is a guide on here on swapping the rear light wiring which makes them plug and play :)

you may have a mark in the paint around the edge of the gasket though as the mk2 gasket is smaller than the mk 4 one

Thanks JimminyBob.
That's exactly what I wanted to hear!
It won't be a problem fiddling with the wiring as I am pretty competent on the electrical side of things.

Alex, that shouldn't be a problem as I am intending to do an entire respray as soon as I have the funds available.

Now I just need to decide whether or not to put a reverse light on.

Thanks for the help guys.
Harry

With the electrics push the old cables through the lights on both sets and remove the small plate it should twist off andouille he wire back through repeat for all of the wires then swap the wires over so mk4 wiring into the mk2 lights make sure the springs from the mk2 light go make in them as they are different sizes, then reattach the plate and cut off the reversing light cable.
I found it best to do one side and a time so you can check where the correct cable positioning do want to going wrong :P
Hope this helps

Sorry but that sounds like a classic case of bodgery being far more work than doing something properly! Either converting the loom to the original Mk2 termination or buying a pair of 4-way church window connectors to convert the lamps to Mk4 termination would be far simpler and would leave you with a pair of functioning lamps to sell.

Yeah I know but I'm not very good with electrics :P and I had a spare mk4 loom hanging around

sorry to dig up an old thread but will the light lens covers simply screw on to mk4 units?

Nope, the mk2 light lenses are smaller than the mk4 lights. You need to change the whole unit
