The original of that Martin Holmes book had a photo of me at a control on the Welsh International in about 1970! That might well put you off buying the book.
I've got the 1978 third edition (very well thumbed!) - are you still in that one?! Good to know the book is still useful today, I'll have to have another read of it!

The thing I noticed on the Tour of Cheshire was that whilst there were quite a few Minis, there were only two Cortinas, a Mk.1 GT and a Mk.2 Lotus. That was strange as 'in the period' the top 10 would be virtually all Minis & Cortinas. I guess the Cortinas have all rusted away. There were a few Anglias though and they were very competitive back then.
For me it was about night rallies and special stage events, but of course it's not so easy to organise night events these days.
Still, it's all great fun.

If you want to read up on rally navigation there is an excellent book called Rally Navigation by Martin Holmes.
It runs through lots of different techniques, types and styles of navigation. It also suggests what you should take with you when navigating.
There are loads of them on Ebay as teh book has been printed quite a few times. The most up to date version has a Citroen on the cover.
Here's a link to an example on Ebay at the momment.

I have an old copy and found the book useful for tip with marshalling as well.
Also a good thing to help you with plotting is what is known as a roamer

It helps with compass points and map referancing when used with OS Land Ranger maps.
Hi,
Took your advice and purchased copy off e bay. It arrived today and my 13 year old is reading it as I type. Well his teachers did say he needs to read more and it is educational!

The tests are well laid out and the navigation is testing in terms of accuracy and ability, but nothing practicve can't overcome.
Just get out as a team and practice navigating and keeping to a stricty time schedule.
The car needs to be very reliable, but not necessarily mega-powerful.
The entire historic rally scene is reat fun.
