If its all ok visually on the linkage and stick and the roll pin is not broken on the input to the selector and from the noises you describe its looking like what you suspect, I suspect its not going to look very pretty inside? 3/4th are on a different hub to 1/2nd so not selecting by the looks of it inside. not sure why reverse made the noise unless its one of the big mainshaft bearing collapsed ?

If it locked up it is almost certainly the bearing at the output end of the mainshaft. You will find that the final drive gears are mutilated too, as it locked because they wedged together. If I were you I would be looking for a good second hand gerabox, which is what I had to do.

I've got a 1982 mini. On the way home from work, I noticed the reverse gear was clattering quite badly. Then, driving home, gears were hard to find and every now and then a chat-like noise would occur and go away again. Then when I slowed down for traffic lights, I selected second gear and my front wheels locked up. I could only get third or fourth after this. Any ideas you might have about what is wrong would be great. I'm really thinking of ripping the engine out tomorrow.

There, fixed that for you, maybe others will understand what you're saying, too...

I liked the original better ;-)

Jay- there is a reason this happened, the car is telling you it wants that dog box you are looking at. You know it makes sense.

Edit: did you have any luck getting hold of Mark about the socket?

In that case forget transfer gears, as Tiger99 then main shaft bearing (double roller) has probably collapsed

Right lads u ready for it ! This is the second gear box I've managed to brake I think I need full straight cut box to be honest the 1330 has mega amounts of work and money spent on it it's running 93 bhp at wheels tho k it's needing a straight it box but when I broke my 1ltr box that I got 67 bhp at wheels I broke the bearing that is on the right had side by the transfer case but this time it is the middle bearing its a right mess got a spare box on it it atm whilst I look for a decent straight cut box

The broken one was a recon central oil pick big fat magnet and I had a lsd in it but my temp one is out if a low mileage one litre but put my lsd in it and I'm just indeed of a good straight cut box to be honest as I'm going to turbo my 1330
