I used a blast of brake and clutch cleaner to get the surface dirt off, and then follow that up with a good scrubbing with an old toothbrush and paraffin/whitespirit. I then painted mine with plasticote, which is really thin but builds up a good gloss, as well as wiping off with a white spirit soaked rag which makes it very easy to get a clean finish. I also cleaned and wirebrushed any metal such as the alternator bracket, which I then lacquered. This took me about 6 hours overall and is nearly done.

Told you, brake and clutch is da bomb.

Thats what we use to clean everything in college (obviously not the cars). Oil spills on the floor? Brake and clutch and wipe it up.
