Heya all, so i'been desperate to clean my MPI bay for months, cause it's looking a wee bit grotty, and the nice body work people covered the lot in a fine reddy/pink dust when they rubbed kibbles down!

The problem is i have no diea how to go about it. did the old brake cleaning fluid when i first got it and that did bits and bobs, but the bay now looks like it needs a good blast with a hose... Is pressure washing an engine like this safe? How do you guys go about cleaning the whole bay? can't really afford to pull the engine to bits to clean everything minty fresh, but a nice tidy up would make a massive difference :) any help would be appreciated

Mods, i was undecided if this was a problems or styling thread :) please move accordingly, thanksverymuchly

gunk's product are very good although i would expect it at the prices in halfrauds.
You can preasure wash a engine but on a mpi they'll be more electrics & whatnot to seal up.

I've always cleaned mine using white spirit sprayed through a compresed air fed parrafin gun. Works really well, breaks down oil & grease, and evaporates quite quickly too, so it's soon dry and you don't have to worry about water in your electrics like you do with water based cleaning methods.

Wont that end up stripping your bulkhead paint though ?

Could use panel wipe as its not as harsh as thinners or brake cleaner and removes oil. A cheap paint or Shultz gun would make it quick and easy. Make sure you use a drip tray though

Brake and Clutch cleaner.... Use it for everything :P

My first thing to do would be strip the plastic parts off and out the way, cover the ECU and any vital electrics.

I'd take as much off as possible! As it will make your life easier, then a liberal spray down with Brake and clutch and then a quick hose down and a dry off with a microfibre. Then for the plastic, use either something expensive like G1 plastic correct or whatever, or just give them a quick sand and paint with some satin black.

I'd do it for free mate don't need no monies, not from a friend at least. I have a constant supply of brake and clutch in the garage. Its the most useful stuff :P...

Yeah, I'll get it done in a day. I wouldn't say concourse, the effort people go to make a engine concourse is beyond ridiculous and you drive your car almost daily, so there isn't much point.

But yeah, we'll detail it and clean the rest of the car inside and out. I need to pop to halfords to pick up, a new wash mit, 2 new buckets (may have destroyed my two....) Some #00 wire wool and some autosol (used all of mine on my mates GTI), and a **** tonne of Microfibres. Though I have a load now, its no harm in stocking up. Got some lurvly shampoo in the garage, and some nice polish, need some fresh clay aswell. Basically. We need to pop to halfords, but thats only 20 mins from my house.

Would be waxed so all you have to do is give it a quick wash...
