found these pics whilst trawling the net and thought people might like to see. I stll remember the old days when scrapyards were full of minis and metros, now it makes me sad to see them in breakers yards especially clubbies.

enjoy

I'm all for saving Mini's I really am but often, there is a reason a car is in a scrap yard.

I suppose thats why I'm not one of the 'Purists'.

well, did any of you see the photo taken on the airfield with all the scrappage scheme cars? There were quite a few nice looking mini's in there amongst other classic's. People are crazy!

This article still makes me Annoyed.

Despite my earlier post, pretty much all of these cars were still usable and probably still had Tax and MOT.

I don't even know where a scrap yard is. I used to spend all day in and out of the scrap yards that were on Rainham Marshes. I think they all went when that law about recycling all the fluids and the cars had to be on racking came in. I remember jumping from roof to roof from cars stacked 3 high.

If anyone knows if there are any Mini stuffed scrap yards in Colchester or Braintree let me know?

I think the thing is, most mainstream cars go through the doldrums so to speak at some point where they are just seen as old cars, low value, and not worth saving, so many are scrapped when theres really very little wrong with them at all. Its much later when they become rarer and interest in them is resurected then they become worth people spending money and saving.

As far as I know, I dont see a reason why a decent "scrapped" car cant be worked on, re motd and used? Im sure people have done that before. Dont scrap yards sell complete cars sometimes anyway knowing they are decent?

As a Rover 200 owner (the R8 pre 1995 shape) a recent thread on that forum was for a perfectly decent 216 coupe someone bought from a scrap yard for £200 and needed little - just an exhaust and a couple of tyres or something like that to put it back on the road.

Even one of my mates a couple of years ago scrapped a perfectly decent 220GSi now quite sought after just because it needed a new exhaust system and he doesnt know about cars so was quoted about £300 so scrapped it! I could have sorted it for a lot cheaper for him had I known.

But in a way, thats just part of the life cycle of cars, a necessary evil if you like, you cant keep every car on the road!

I remember going down to Peas Pottage scrap yard in Sussex many a time in the mid 90s to get mini parts - there were usually loads down there and it just seemed the norm.

I am guilty of scrapping a mini recently, but it was a complete write off. Needed every panel bar the main bits. Every seam etc was ruined and I could get my leg through the boot, arches and floor >_< But the more of a car scrapped, the more the remaining are worth. I just wish I could have hinesight :teehee:
